First thing I do when I see a Staffie off the lead is look for the owner. If it’s some feckless twat in joggers and an Armani t-shirt, fondling his balls then I usually take my dog off the field at the nearest opportunity.
>”It is actually against the law to have dogs off leads in public spaces now anyway, and I would just ask them to be responsible.”
To be nitpicky this is false. It is illegal to have them dangerously out of control, but there’s no specific law requiring a dog to be on the lead in public. There are of course some areas where it isn’t permitted, like playgrounds, some parks etc etc.
Otherwise hope the horses and their riders are doing okay and that the dog owner comes forward.
You know what, I think it SHOULD be the law to keep all dogs on lead in public now.
Sick to my back teeth of being knocked over, harassed and bitten by random strangers dogs. It’s got worse with Covid and all the morons getting dogs all of a sudden.
I worked with animals for 15 years, so this is not coming from a place of ignorance. I’ve seen first hand the problems with dogs off lead in public, it won’t fix overnight but we should still try and start the ball rolling.

Private dog parks and council run areas for off lead exercise, otherwise they must be on the lead.
