In early 2022, more than 30,000 “Maxim” machine guns were removed from storage in Ukaine, and the vintage water-cooled machine guns proved to be highly effective against “Shahed” drones due to their ability to fire for several minutes at a time.

Well…to be fair most modern machine guns trace their direct lineage to the Maxim. A big plus is the water cooled feature.
I’m sorry, 30,000?! Where and why did they store 30,000 ancient weapons? And in working order no less.
The hovercopter peels away from the battlefield at Mach 0.7 with the doors open with atmospheric shields.
The year is 2174.
The door gunner opens the large metal plate exposing a belt that has been relieved of its ammunition.
Inside a stamped info box and some words scratched in by knife:
MANUFACTURING DATE: JUNE 1934
NORMANDY
IRAQ
MARS
The gunner comms to the pilot on neural amplifier: “Hey! What’s this place called!?”
These were first produced in the 1880’s. Crazy that they’re still effective today.
“Whatever happens, we have got, the Maxim, and they have not.”
Let’s put a Laser pointer on that baby.
TIL there were still 30,000 maxim machine guns in existence
Imagine your job being *watch out for drones with explosives and shoot them down, or you’ll explode*
I love that they even refurbished them with a fresh coat of paint. Feels good seeing 100+ year old warhorses out there living their best life.
Most of the pre 1920’s, 30’s weapons were build to last generations, to be mounted and used from airplanes to ships and generally withstand abuse.
Past that point in time the reliability and quality were not that important as the cost and ease of manufacture.
Now day’s you don’t see that too often.
COD-Ukraine developers, take note!
