  1. They reckoned they could build a metro for 3 billion 😂😂😂

  2. That’s not going to be the last increase. The hospital turned into a cow that never stops giving milk. Keep on milking.

  3. When you rob someone for a billion and they do nothing in response, you keep going until they do

  4. This now makes the children’s hospital officially the most expensive hospital in the entire history of the world. I’m actually not joking, at present the most expensive is Royal Adelaide Hospital at around €1.5bn or a little above it. We are about 20-25% above that a do honestly expect it to be closer to double by the time it is actually open.

The only way this becomes at all acceptable is if it turns be one the very, very, very best hospital in the entire world also, but we all know that won’t even be within an arses roar of the case.

There should at this stage be a serious inquest and possible investigation as to where exactly every penny of this money as gone. But there won’t be. And as I work in the HSE in central admin, I would be pretty shocked if they could even produce that, or anything close to it.

  5. Why did making it an arty building come before more sensible things like cost and deadlines?

  6. >The Cabinet has been informed that the cost of the National Children’s Hospital has increased by €501m.

    >The original estimated cost was €450m in 2017.

    >The Government announced enhanced capital and budget sanctions to bring the approved budget to €2.24 billion.

So the increase in cost is more than the original estimated cost and the new estimated cost is 5 times the original. Insane.

  7. Serious question.. why have these developers of the site not been arrested for fraud ?

  8. There’s certainly been some challenges with transparency of costs associated with the NCH. Definitely going to be some serious retrospectives on this needed.

  9. Surely there has to be some change with how contracts are given. BAM has the project go from €450m to over €2bn and is still able to bid on other government contracts without issue.

Not to mention going ahead with no finalised build plan and building in such an awful location.

  10. The inquiry into how this happened will take 15 years and cost €40 million. Nobody will be blamed, recommendations will be made but ignored, and something similar will happen again.

  11. Surely BAM are having a right laugh …. Charge whatever they want because we are going to pay it! Like surely someone along the way should have said hold on here … let’s stop and re access the costs instead of just saying Ye sure build on

  12. I say we aim for a 3 billion cost. Give the developers a bonus and give the same contractors more state projects

  13. I love the “around 2 billion bit”. Most people have no idea of the magnitude in difference between a million and a billion. 1 million seconds is 12 days. 1 billion seconds is 32 years, coincidentally how long it will take to finish this monument to colossal stupidity, cronyism and parish pump politics.

  14. Didn’t Leo Varadkar explicity state the cost would not reach €2billion? Like I remember him being adamant this wouldn’t happen and he would know considering how involved in the whole process he has been.

  15. Imagine how easy it is to hide and wash a few hundred thousand in 2 BILLION. Incredulous management and nothing will be done as usual.

  16. From PWC in 2019:

“The basis of the original budget was flawed and risks were understated in the business case,” it says. “There was a lack of sufficiently comprehensive or robust planning for the process to establish a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) for the construction of the New Children’s Hospital. This created a situation in which the approved project could never be delivered within the financial parameters agreed.”

  17. And yet there are people who seriously think our government should be responsible for nearly all housing construction.

  18. I remember being slated here for saying that BAM internally had priced this hospital to 2.1 – 2.35 billion

And roughly another 900 million estimated to get the doors opened, beds in,IT etc set up

This project started off with an estimate of 600 million and contracts were rushed to be signed and get it started (trucks & diggers literally moved in over a weekend),and noone has been able to adequately account for why this is

  19. Going to be great when it’s finished. When’s it open?

  20. Have any politicians recently purchased an island off the coast of Kerry?

  21. I’m not surprised. Concrete alone is about 40% more expensive these days with inflation and the levy than it was in 2017 when this was priced.

  22. Our country just doesn’t work. We have to face up to that

  23. And they won’t be able to staff it. They can’t get nurses for the hospitals they already have

  24. We do need a national children’s hospital, there’s no doubt about that, but what really angers me about this fiasco is we’ve lashed probably more than an extra billion of the health service capital budget into an over priced fiasco.

If you’d put €500m each into the new elective hospitals in Cork and Limerick, it would have literally saved lives by resolving the absolutely ludicrous overcrowding in UHL and CUH. Even if they ended another €500m on top of that, it would still have been a HUGE impact.

Instead we’ve got a money pit of a mess that’s not going to be any better than if it had been done to a reasonable budget. It’s just an over priced building on a stupidly complex site.

  25. Considering CERN cost £4.5b, just over double what this hospital cost. And considering the challenges in building it, the tech that went into it, and everything that it has produced, its safe to say that our Govt/country is an absolute joke of a place!

  26. Was talking to a fella recently who is a subcontractor on the job and has a few men working on site. He said he is completely fed up and ready to quit. According to him there have been changes to the plan a few times which has caused to go back and redo work.

I know he is only a very small part of the overall job but if his experience is replicated across the whole site then it makes sense that it has gone so far over budget.

  27. At this stage the state is lining the pockets of its friends.

  28. And there are people on this website who think Irish people should hand over even more money to the government in taxes…

  29. This is because the design was only about 50% complete when the project was awarded. This meant the contractor involved underpriced the first 50% to ensure they got it . And they can absolutely make a killing on the rest of it . Public outcry put so much pressure on the HSE to push on with starting the project that they ended up starting without a full design being completed. Thus the position it’s now in . Government did what the public wanted at the time but Joe public wouldn’t even take the knock on into consideration. BAM are professional bandits be under no illusion, but we the public opened the door for this
