  1. Sara Cox clearly just heard it during the news in the middle of her show. Bless her she sounded absolutely broken.

  2. This is such sad news. Myself and my wife always listen to Sunday Love Songs. Have done since we started dating. Hungover, cup of tea in bed, bacon sandwich and Steve Wright was a very regular occurence. Really shocked by this. RIP Steve.

  3. In tribute, radio 2 presenters are only going to play half a song, sing badly over the rest of it, and then play a 5 minute long jingle. Sad news

  4. I wasn’t a fan of his presenting style but this is still sad news, 69 is younger than I used to think it was when I was a kid

  5. Always partial to a bit of wrighty and the old woman on the afternoon slot.

    R.I.P wrighty

  6. Listening to Radio 2 right now is heartbreaking. Sara Cox and Bobbie Pryor are in bits. Really sad news – Steve Wright defined my youth on Radio 1 and then adulthood on Radio 2.

  7. Rip Wrighty..

He does look like Ali G in that photo tho.

  8. Sad to hear this, I did used to enjoy his afternoon show on R1 back in the 80s. Wasn’t he supposed to be in the presenting line up for BBC’s new ‘oldies’ station (or did I dream that?).

  9. That’s really sad news. Stalwart of my teenage years on radio 1, he was one of the best DJs there in the 1980s

  10. Fond memories as a kid on the drive up to Hull and my dad would have it on the Radio. Factoids, Golden Oldies, Serious Jockin’

    Ah

  11. Hard to think we’ll never hear his voice live again, very sad! 🙁

  12. Guy was a powerhouse of the industry and should be respected for that.

He was omnipresent throughout my life.

Not a great fan of his presenting style or musical choices, but he didn’t ‘offend’ me.

It is a sad day for very many people

  13. That’s sad news. He was clearly a dedicated and talented broadcaster whether to your taste or not. Great that he spent his life doing what he loved and bringing pleasure to millions.

  14. Wow, this is really sad. I grew up with Wrighty and loved his shows.
    RIP Steve, you’ll be missed.

  15. I’ve been listening to the fella since his Radio 1 days. Sad day indeed, he’ll be missed.

  16. As I hit my mid 40s and started listening to R2, I always enjoyed Steve on a Sunday. His love songs and the musicals with Elaine Paige are my chill out on a Sunday. I’m going to miss him. Choked up listening to Saras show, he was obviously a much liked person. Rest easy Steve, thanks for the tunes

  17. Steve Wright In The Afterlife.

Puns aside, hope his family are bearing up as well as possible.

  18. Jesus Christ I did not see that coming. I still have the recording of the shout out he did for us travelling up in our campervan while we were blasting out some Serious Jockin’ (no G!)

What a legend. He’ll be dearly missed.

  19. Awful news, he’s been a familiar voice to generations. He might not have been everyones cup of tea but I liked him, listening to radio 2 now and it’s heartbreaking hearing Sara and Bobbi trying to get through it

  20. This is really sad. I listened to his drive time show every night on my way home from work during the early 2010s.

  21. Really am absolutely gutted to hear about this. Used to listen to his show’s (Steve Wright in the Afternoon) after school without fail, and also on the way back home from my IT training course in the very early 90s. Absolutely loved it along with Simon Mayo et al back then. Still remember Sid the Manager, Mr Angry, Billy and Dave and Another True Story.

    Really am lost for words.

    Rest in Peace Steve.

  22. Rest in peace Steve …. I have loved listening to you over the years 💙

  23. Gutted and shocked by this. He had his haters but I was always a fan, was just listening to him this morning on his pick of the pops show on BBC Sounds.

Some fond memories of him, I grew up with him first on Radio 1 then over to Radio 2. He brightened up.many a dull afternoon and afternoon radio has never been the same since he left

  24. Absolutely gutted, listened to his afternoon show on Radio 1 every day after school throughout my years at secondary, loved the characters and skits mixed in with the music.

‘Llama Man, Llama Man, does everything a llama can. He can bleat! He can trot! He’s got everything a llama’s got! Here comes Llama Man.’

  25. One of those breaking news alerts that made me catch my breath.

    Genuinely shockin. No G.

  26. I spent many a happy journey home with my dad on Friday afternoons listening to him, it’s affected me more than I thought.

Ask Elvis was another cracking “bit”.

Will be very sadly missed, he’d just started doing Pick of the Pops on Saturdays too.

  27. Real shame, he got me through some grim days working in Central London pre internet. RIP.

  28. Oh man 🙁

had the radio on when they announced it. Actually really sad about it, like most of UK I’ve grown up listening to Steve Wright. As a teen going to the roadshows, my first job listening to Steve in the afternoon, he’s always been there. Texting in for a shout-out, serious jockin , all the characters, ask Elvis was genius. Bless you Steve, thanks for being there.
