Genuinely gutted about this. Got me through so many dull afternoons at work.
That’s such sad news.
Not sure if it’s a coincidence but for the last short while BBC Radio 2 has just been playing back to back songs without anything in between at all, like a playlist.
He’d just done the (albeit pre-recorded) Sunday Love Songs as usual, Valentine’s special.
Weirdly fitting that’s the last one? I dunno. Sad news.
**Edit**: it feels weird listening now. Bobbie with the traffic proper broke down crying and couldn’t continue. You could always feel their genuine rapport even with just her cameo roles on his show. Testament to his personality, I think.
Feels like…I’m intruding in their grieving. But like she remarked, Steve would kill her for crying there.
This is rough for all of them eh.
Sara explained his former producer who knew him well has come through to the studio just to throw on songs he knows Steve loved. Fitting.
I was never a huge fan of his “DJ Silly Boy” nonsense, but he clearly had a huge fanbase who loved his work. Tragic to go at such a relatively young age, especially for his kids.
I just wonder if getting the boot from Radio 2 had anything to do with it…it was a big part of his life after all.
RIP. Serious knockin’ (on heaven’s door)!
Man, that’s not a death I was expecting. I only listened to him for a year or two during covid but genuinely enjoyed him. A sad loss of a great old school DJ.
It’s not an ounce of hyperbole to say he was one of the greatest broadcasters in the history of the medium. Radio 2 won’t be the same without him.
This is a genuine shame. His show on radio two in the afternoons got me through covid. Genuine loss to the industry
Was never a huge fan of the more cringe parts of his show, and Sunday Love Songs was just glurge, but he obviously cared a lot about his audience and about music.
A true legend of the medium – never was a Radio 2 listener regularly but to keep your job and stay popular with the general public for 40-odd years you’ve got to be doing something very right.
This is the saddest celebrity death for me in quite some time. Lots of fond memories of listening to him over the years. Truly one of the best presenters we’ve ever had. Absolutely tragic.
Did they just announce a new station for him?
cruel how life works at times
Used to listen 20 odd years ago when my mum would run me to school or pick me up, when I was a youngen. Or she’d have it on Sunday mornings, and the kid reading out ‘Steve Wrights Sunday love songs’ is forever impressed upon my mind.
Haven’t really listened to him at all since, but when I think back to that point of my life it’s always got Radio 2 as the backing track and Steve as the host.
Rest in peace old boy.
I’ve always remembered something odd that happened on his afternoon show right before Operation Desert Storm happened. Steve gave some breaking news saying “It’s started”. I thought “Oh shit!” and waited until after he played some music but he never mentioned it again and there was nothing on the news either. Later that night the attack actually started. I’ve always wondered if he was slapped with a D-Notice after getting wind of some kind of action that the government didn’t want publicised.
Steve Wright in the afternoon got me through a lot of dull afternoons. Thanks Steve.
I remember really enjoying him on radio 1 on the way home from school about 35 years ago or so.
This news makes me so angry, I’m going to throw the phone down .
The guy was clearly a legend. Loving the show Steve.
Remember reading thread after thread on here about how awful his program was and how they should remove him from the BBC. I suspect half of those people are now on here talking about what a sad loss he is hypocrites !
The traffic lady actually properly started crying during her report
I grew up listening to Steve and have enjoyed his humour all my life, really going to miss his little sound effects mid song and of course Mick and Keith amongst all the other things.
Wasn’t a fan of his afternoon show, but his presence on radio cant be understated, my condolences to his family.
Am genuinely shocked and very very sad. Miss you already Steve.
For me this is up there with if something (not tempting fate) happened to Monty Don. Steve Wright was one of those gentle presences in life that you only notice when it’s gone. Yeah his style was probably a bit naff and outdated but he was a relic in a good way IMO, at a time when everything seems to be changing. Solidly brilliant professional broadcaster too, these days the idea of being a ‘pro’ radio presenter is a but of an old concept when comedians and personalities all have shows. I’m absolutely gutted tbh.
I was lucky enough to have my website as ‘website of the day’ back in 2000 and also he played my oldies about 5 years ago , listened to Steve from the crazy radio 1 days all the way through to when his afternoon show finished , loved everything he did

RIP Steve
Usually when no one mentions what caused it means suicide? As if he was rushed to hospital the report usually says.
I didn’t listen every week but I liked his Sunday Love Songs.
Genuinely shocked. He will always be a staple of our everyday drives etc. rest in peace.
Shocked by this, I was listening to him this morning on Pick of the pops. I grew up listening to him on Radio 1 and then on Radio 2. So many good memories and seemed like such a nice man. Was kinda annoyed when he lost his afternoon slot, afternoons were never the same.
Ah man this one hit me hard, he was always such a breathe of fresh air and always managed to give me optimism towards the end of my working day, especially for serious jokin on a Friday. You’ll be missed Steve.
So sad. I remember the summer road shows back in the 90’s.
Oh wow. I used to enjoy Serious Jockin’ while driving up to see my gf on a Friday afternoon. Wasn’t he broadcasting just last week? I feel like this wasn’t expected at all.
It’s nice to see all the warm words being said about him; UK reddit seemed to hate his shows for some reason.
Was never a big fan of his, think I was too young to get it, but I’d be lying it that music he would play the end of the show didn’t make me happy. Meant it was 5 o clock and time to go home.
I was also a big fan of him inserting sound effects into the pause part of come up and see me
Very Sudden. Wasn’t he announced as the figurehead of a new BBC digital radio station like yesterday?
Steve Wright is one of the strangest people in the history of British radio and that says a lot. Love him or hate him, he brought a huge amount of groundbreaking features to UK radio and should be commended for his commitment to the art.
RIP Steve.
Wow love songs was always on the radio at my parents house. I should message them
Love him or hate him you don’t get that length of career at the top through luck.
I used to enjoy serious jockin, a chance for radio 2 to get a bit more of a higher tempo at finishing time
Very sad to hear. I’m always reading his factoid books. I loved his show and him.
Checking in from Stateside to say that this news hurts my heart and I shed tears when I heard it. I studied in London and Young Steve Wright in the Afternoon was one of the things that kept me going on long, dreary, lonely Winter days. He was so genuinely funny and gifted… I have such great memories of Damien the Radio 1 social worker, the geese, the fish filet dude. This takes me right back there, and I wish so much that it wasn’t under such sad circumstances.
