Donnelly says restrictions will not be kept in place just to protect the health of those who don’t get a vaccine. “I don’t believe we should curtail civil liberties or economic liberties for a country, based on a small number of people who choose not to protect themselves.”

  1. “To all you anti-vaxxers calling for more restrictions, not on my watch guys”

    Stephen ‘Spartacus’ Donnelly.

  2. Is it just me or does that sound like a veiled reference to vaccine passes possibly being scaled back? The civil liberties bit? I think the legislation for them is up for review in March I think and I would love to see them go but I think a lot of people find them reassuring for some reason so I am nervous we will be stuck with them for another while.

Just to avoid confusion I am not against vaccination etc I just despise the concept of the vaccine pass in daily life, especially with how high our vaccination and booster uptake is.

  3. Have to agree with him. If people don’t want to take the vaccine that’s fine but the rest of the population shouldn’t have to be put out because of it.

  4. I would encourage everyone to email their TDs and let them know they want to see the restrictions removed. It only takes a few minutes to do.

  5. Just back from liverpool the weekend.

Full stadium for the match and nightclubs going strong every single person i met was in high spirits, no masks in shops only if you want too (i did wear it) atmosphere on the streets would make you think there was no Covid, clearly living with Covid. – No pointing finger at supposedly “antivaxers”, no bitching over noses sticking out over a mask, no frowning at your neighbour for socialising, a real sense of community about the place…

What an embarrassment Ireland has become, I can feel a real sense of division among humanity here, and thats something i would never have thought id compare to the Uk

“He said the press had not been “vigilant enough” in questioning authorities about whether people were hospitalised “with corona and not because of corona”.“Because it makes a difference,” he wrote.“A big difference. Precisely, the official hospitalisation numbers have been shown to be 27 per cent higher than the actual figure for how many there are in the hospital, simply because they have corona. We only know that now.”

But he pointed the finger at authorities, saying it was they who were “first and foremost … responsible for informing the population correctly, accurately and honestly”.

  7. Sounds like a totally sensible approach to me.

People should take a bit of responsibility for their own actions and then plan accordingly. If you want to go outside and live a normal life, good for you. If you want to shit yourself indoors and WFH and never leave the house, good for you.

  8. Or how about just remove restrictions considering that 50 people in ICU hardly makes a difference?
That said, does it mean the end for stupid passes?

  9. This absolute dosser is trying to pretend it’s the unvaccinated’s fault we had all those restrictions and it was them who wanted them. No egghead it was your fault.

  10. The lads in here falling for the blatant politicking is gas.

The narratives changed from a **“tiny minority are holding us back”** to **“we shouldn’t let a tiny minority hold us back”** when the facts showed they didn’t make sense. Play both sides and always come out on top.

  11. I highly doubt the small minority who have decided not to get the vaccine would support restrictions to protect them either.

  12. If only the same logic was applied to obesity and alcoholism. Instead we got the sugar tax (fizzy drinks tax, when was the last time Coke Zero was cheaper than regular Coke?) and the MUP.

Hopefully the attitude of personal accountability sticks.

  13. Restrictions were never put in place to protect the unvaccinated, where’s that shite coming from? Restrictions were first put in place to protect the elderly and otherwise vulnerable and then to stop hospitals from being overwhelmed. That’s the story they sold is anyway, why is it changing now? Trying to shift the blame for the restrictions which have less and less support?

  14. Sorry, but the current variant enables the country to be open now regardless. Almost like he’s thinking 6 months ago.

  15. That’s phrased weirdly, almost implying anti-vax people would be upset that restrictions could be lifted?

  16. Ok that’s fine now why do we have minimum unit pricing of alcohol for everyone based on a small number of people who are alcoholics

  17. Hmm. Did we wait this long just so that Donnelly could find a good enough speech to plagiarize before we reopen? I’ve seen this regurgitated several times already.

  18. Those who don’t want the vaccine also don’t want restrictions. Common sense would tell you that those who are unvaccinated don’t believe that COVID poses a threat to their health, otherwise they would have taken a vaccine. Pubs were closed at 8 in order to stop the spread of the virus to the unvaccinated, when only the vaccinated could even be in the pubs in the first place.
I don’t understand who he’s pandering to with these comments haha.

  19. People here are blaming the unvaccinated but the reality in front of us shows that vaccines offer strong INDIVIDUAL protection, but do not significantly impact transmission rates. I’m sorry but you do not need to be a scientist to understand that the vaccine was originally designed based on the wild type strain and now we have Omicron. So, people who advocate for the vaccine passport system cannot truly claim it is for public health reasons. It is a coercion and punishment device. They use phrases like “encourage young people to be vaccinated ” when really we mean “coerce people to take a medication”. They say things like “you have a choice, but that choice has consequences” when they are really saying “If I don’t agree with your choice you should be punished, even though I freely admit you are commiting no crime”. That’s just the reality of what people who advocate for these passes are saying. Nobody who agrees with these passes truly cares about civil rights or bodily integrity. Its sad that these terms even conjure up thoughts of the far right and conspiracy when you try and say they are things that should be protected, even in a crisis. Also, people are constantly equating the unvaccinated with far right conspiracy theory people and that is not at all fair. The passes need to go, they have divided us so much in the short time they’ve been in, it’s scary what is happening all over Europe.
