Donald Trump just did Europe a favor

  1. “In one fell swoop over the weekend, Donald Trump freed Europe from the confines of the American security bubble”

There is a saying The EU only makes big moves in crisis. Trump is that crisis, and just the prospect of him taking power should be enough to make Europe act.

There is still reticence on this continent about EU self defense.

But politicians need to explain to citizens that entrusting Europe’s security to a foreign protector is and always was a big risk. This is what makes them subject to the whims of a few thousand Americans in Iowa.

  2. He made a favor that you cannot refuse, like all mobsters do.

  3. A united European military doesn’t negate the need for broader international support to stave off Russian aggression

  4. Trump being president of usa would do a big favour to the eu. We need to rely on ourselves not uncle sam anymore. Nato is obsolete anyway, we need a common eu army and that’s it.

  5. It will be good for Europe in the long run. But for the US, it´s one of the biggest geopolitical mistakes in modern history. To give up influence like that, and all the economic opportunities that comes with it, is unfathomable. The US is the most disliked country on Earth, without Europe backing them, they´ll standalone against BRICS who is coming for the US. BRICS will be double the size of the US in a not so distant future. Europe backing the US was its only hope of fighting them off. It will be the end of US exceptionalism.

Good job, Trump. You just ruined what Truman and Churchill established after World War 2 because you´re mad about vaccines, pride flags and climate change. Trump and his treasonus culture warriors like Musk, Carlson, Rogan etc. should all be boycotted. Don´t buy ANYTHING they offer.

  6. The US is/and has always been in the business of protecting its own interests.

I don’t mean this in a bad way.

    Every country does the same.

The point is there are no hand-outs here. Trump likes to act like that’s the case but every decision, every dollar spent, already had a return on that investment.

    Nothing is owed.

A favor? No, he’s doing nobody a favor by destabilizing the world further. He’s not doing anybody a favor by trying to blackmail allies.

  7. America can do what it wants but we should stop deferring to them. Our policy towards Iran and Saudi etc should be our own…

  8. The article is right – Trump or somebody else Europe must start spending more on military, invest in R&D so we are not buying from the US. Europe is more than capable of that but will have to make sacrifices along the way. It can’t be like it is right now that Russia that is technologically in the previous century and has fraction of EU economy is such a huge thread.

  9. Nah, screw it, the buffoon is fully right in this.

We had 16 years since Russia invaded Georgia. 10 years since Russia waged a proxy war in Ukriane, and shot down a civilian plane. It’s been 2 years now that Russia openly waged war against Ukraine. 2 years of murdering civilians. 2 years of even more blatant anti-Western propaganda.

I will not even go on about the state of the rest of the world and the threats abroad.

I am supposed to be mad at Orange Man and not at the likes of DeCroo, whose wealthy nation, which has its own MIC and heaps of talented engineers and officers, can’t even get to 1.5% spending? Not just that, DeCroo goes to Xi to tell him that he will oppose decoupling from the PRC?
And again, I am supposed to hate Trump more than such sods in Western Europe?

Years of gaslighting and spitting in the face of Eastern states that warned about Russia, and even as shit hit the fan, Western Europe does basically nothing.

Oh they do something: berate Czechia for not wasting a few months to consider flying heaps of trash vs. American choppers.

  10. This is the stupidest, most moronic take.

The mutual security guarantee prevents the need to defend ourselves. Trump’s screwing with the defense guarantee (damage is already done!) significantly heightens the risk of having to defend ourselves. The fact that we’ll have more European military resources to do it with is hardly a silver lining.

  11. Wall Street for the most part wants a quick end to the war and this is what is behind this. Getting back to “business as usual” or maybe preserving the dollars dominance by not making enemies. Maybe it’s just a decade of successful influence campaigns by Russia. Looking forward to the same mentality but for Taiwan because American are so easily influenced.

  12. Trump is a fifth columnist and should be in a very small prison cell

  13. No he didn’t, if he did then the EU would’ve actually gotten its shit together when he was running for president for his first term.

  14. Hey, then we should also thank the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact for once making Western Europe and North America build powerful armies during the Cold War.

Thanks, commies of Russia and also of the Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic States and all you other SSR’s, East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria. Thanks for the memories, we couldn’t have done all that without you.

  15. As an American, I think this is the thing that will doom him. A lot of people give him the benefit of the doubt for the dumb things he says and try to explain its not meant to be taken seriously, but this statement was pretty clear. Its either this statement or taking credit for Taylor swift will take him down.

  16. Isn’t it odd that Trump is so adamant about other parties pay their dues, while he himself is famous for never paying anyone?

  17. And to highlight the effectiveness of his madness, he will now go on the campaign trail and say someone finally has forced allies to not be overtly dependent on the US, and he did it.

Never mind that he hasn’t done a thing, or that everything is more complicated with proper nuance…..a shocking amount of Americans neither fact check, nor make any attempt to grasp a nuanced subject.

It’s fish in a barrel for this guy like that.

  18. I don’t like Trump, but is this article serious? This was kind of the whole Trump’s point. He believes that it’s what Europe ought to do – defend itself (or at least makes it look like he believes it).

If that made Europe to realize it needs to do it, well then Mr. Trump seems to have achieved the goal with one phrase.

  19. Yeah, the buffoon is a tactless fool who says a lot of idiotic and empathy-deprived things, but it’s totally valid to highlight that Europe relies too much on US military. Trump is a little bit silly missing that this whole situation has been manufactured by the US, which has *wanted* to be the one with *the* military over the last 70 years.

  20. The problem is the way politics is in America. One side is all for supporting allies the other is against anything the other side is for.

  21. I’ve been saying it for years now, dependancy in the US is bad for europe, as well as american technology. It only takes one rogue president to render an entire fleet of military tech useless.

  22. Springer Presse licking the butt of a right wing nationalist.

    What a suprise…

  23. The 2024 Election will determine the divorce between US-Europe. With a Biden re-election, it will be a ‘velvet’ one, with continuous cooperation and massive military and financial boost. With a second Trump term, it might lead to a bloody war and a Russian triumph. DNC, get your shit done. We Europeans want our democracy, rights and self-determination protected against the Russian evil. Get Americans to reject Trump again.

  24. The irony of the only ally to ever invoke article 5 being the US is hilarious.

  25. As an American, I 100% support NATO, but I’ve still been saying this for years. Hoping America swoops in to save the day when needed has never been a valid defensive policy. Even if America would come to a country’s aid, Europe needs to be able to stand on its own.

  26. Well well, looking at the comments it is mostly: _Eastern Europe is bad, Western Europe don’t care_

With this kind of behaviors, we’re even further away from a European army… SAD as he says.

  27. Frankly I’m sick and tired of this isolationist mindset here in the US. We are the PREEMINENT global Superpower, our influence unmatched, our military unassailable. We have built an economic empire that stretches from continent to continent, and have come out of the Cold War as the sole global hegemony. Our ability to provide cheap smartphones and relatively low taxes and food compared to the rest of the world is only in thanks to the US navy that guarantees unmolested shipping around the world. Our VERY WAY OF LIFE is underpinned by our continued and predominant position as the ultimate guaranteer of global stability. As a nation we are ascendant, second to none. And now that the corpse of the USSR crawls at our feet with communist china holding it’s leash, with numerous other authoritarian belligerents seeking to overthrow the Western liberal order and plunge the world into chaos, these “Republicans” dare to deny Ukraine a measly 60 billion dollars?! We spend almost a trillion a year, fields after field of desert covered by the rusting machines of thousands of war machines sitting here doing NOTHING. For a comparatively low price with ZERO American lives lost, we could cripple Russia for decades to come, make them EVER regret the thought of even having the thought of threatening our world order. But if we waver, if we fail to commit to our alliances, China will move on Taiwan, forcing us into an even larger conflict, the web of interconnected global trade and stability that has made us so rich and powerful will fall apart, out economy will collapse, chaos will reign supreme.
The United States of America is the only hegemony in the world that protects the idea of representative democracy around the world, as flawed as it may be, by the might of our military and the power of our collective alliances and economies with our Allies. We are NOTHING without our global network, and we must defend it at ALL costs.

  28. Europe needs to become a united federal nations, a federal system, one army, one economy, one country, one people.

  29. Clickbait bullshit.

Trump said something monumentally stupid. Big shocker.

First of all he does not have the authority to unilaterally pull the US out of NATO or any say in how the US spends money. The purse is controlled by the house of representatives.

Secondly do you really think that the Republicans will ignore the interests of their donors – the military industrial complex? This war might as well be a commercial for US arms. I will give you three guesses who the world will turn to for weapons when Russia’s super weapons turned out to be duds.

Trump will think about doing it, than pick a fight with whatever celebrity he feels threatened by and will promptly forget about it. He does not do “policy”. He is a reality show host, not a politician
