The most recent numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveal that in the United States, who we are too often determines what we get to do for a living, Timothy Noah writes.
I would disagree with Timothy Noah who says in the article at the end.
Examining racial and gender over- and under-representationwithin occupations is only one way to measure racial and genderinequality, which in turn is only one way to measure inequality morebroadly. ”
Measuring the skin color of those who work whatever profession won’t tell you anything more than how many people are in that profession, and means nothing else.
For instance, if I were to say “people who sing Rythm and Blues or Rap music, is mainly Black people”, say its 97% Black. Am I then to conclude the Blacks are discriminating against Whites and Asians and Russians by not allowing them into their club? Thats what the writer here is saying. He even goes onto say jobs like “Nail Salons” have to much Asian “over-representation”.
Maybe that the profession these people like to do, or its what they are good at, or interested in more, dunno. I could say of all the Abacus users, most are Asian, maybe 95%, does that mean the rest of us can’t operate a Abacus. Maybe we didn’t have one growing up and they did?
Bottom line is you cannot come up with any conclusion about how many people of whatever color work whatever professions other than a number for it. Now that can be useful for marketing purposes however.
If I know that most Rappers are black, then it makes sense to me as a Rapper to do my advertising in Black areas of town.
Don’t need affirmative action when everyone is underemployed and worried about getting layed off. It was a product of the 80s
Of course affirmative action is dead; it’s discrimination.
We need policies like affirmative action but based demographics (poor counties and communities). Give scholarships to POOR people of all races. It’s laughable that people support such racial division like that. It’s so messed up that some colleges are offering segregated graduations if people want to participate. What a weird world 🤡
