  1. U.S. intelligence on a “serious threat to national security” relates to Russia’s desire to “put a nuclear weapon into space,” ABC News reported on Feb. 14, citing two unnamed sources familiar with the discussions.

The reports came after Mike Turner, the chair of the U.S. House of Representatives intelligence committee, informed all Congress members about a “threat” related to “destabilizing foreign military capability.”

  2. This would be a serious escalation on par with various tense Cold War events. Russia could disable an entire constellation of satellites in a moment.

The consequences of such would be devastating to communications and navigation, especially for the military which relies heavily on GPS systems and communication satellites.

Edit: reportedly this weapon has **not** been deployed by Russia but it has been under development (presumably it is close to being ready, with the Soyuz launch on Feb 9th bring a successful test that has significantly advanced the development of the weapon)

  3. I always wonder if the US has a few extra satellites available that are critical to be ready to be shot up into space to replace.

  4. Always good when the leader of russia looks at the plot of a james bond movie and goes “actually, yes, I will put a nuke in space.”

TBH Im a little surprised there wasnt one up there already

  5. Sometimes you have to ask if it would be better to start WW3 now and decapitate all these dictatorships… or keep being passive aggressive(on an international scale), just waiting for them to start it on their terms.

  6. There was a movie about that!
    “Space Cowboys” 2000
They can do it again! Where is Tommy Lee Jones?

  7. I’m not really sure why we would have ever trusted Russia to *not* put nukes in space. I seriously hope this is not a surprise to anyone in the military or we are even more fucked than I thought

  8. What a stupid move by Russia, if true.

Current delivery systems are more than adequate – putting nukes in space would be incredibly expensive and do essentially nothing in terms of a practical boon to nuclear capability (the triad is more than sufficient to ensure MAD).

In keeping with Putin’s MO, this would be a stupid and wasteful move that would nevertheless increase tensions.

Nukes (or even kinetic impactors) in space are simply a stupid idea.

  9. Yet another reason trump can never be allowed to become president.

  10. Oh, good.

Sure, let’s put weapons platforms in space that we will eventually blow up and probably trap ourselves on this planet forever by creating a larger web of debris in our orbit.

    Brilliant.

  11. Do you think humans will ever out grow conflict. Humanity has discovered a new frontier it is possible to go above the sky… humans be like put nukes there fuck it.

  12. Can’t imagine this actually gets any traction from the Russian side. China and India know how dangerous and dumb this is as well and will see this as a no-op. Russia will quickly alienate themselves globally here if they try and push this through. Unlike with Ukraine, China, who considers themselves to be Russia’s superior at this point, is not going to sit back and let Russia get this type of advantage over them just to spite the USA.

Also, highly doubt Russia has the capabilities to develop a platform to service these weapons in space so they’d routinely need to be brought down to remain effective and this would just become target practice for other militaries. Russia just continues to play hot-potato here with trying to do agitating things to gain battlefield advantages in Ukraine.

  13. I saw this movie before. Gonna need to send a team of 80 year old retired astronauts up there.

  14. If this happens, the West has some very difficult decisions to make about how it’s going to handle this escalation. In addition, Russia would effectively break MAD with such a deployment, achieving a severely dangerous amount of leverage against the West.

This could spell the end of the West’s hardened support of Ukraine and create serious problems for NATO.

Or this is a Russian bluff to force the US and UA to back down.

  15. Incoming nuke race. How fun. Why cant we just be trying to outdo each other with moon bases or some shit?

  16. Russia cant keep warships floating in the Black Sea. They cant keep tanks from getting vaporized by 200 dollar drones, and they’re losing troops by the company…I dont think Russia is capable of pulling that shit off.

  17. In that case it seems like the prudent move is to oppose Russia’s European expansion plan that’s currently running through Ukraine, and stop installing Russian assets into federal government, am I right?

  18. People seem to be misunderstanding how space based nukes would be used. They are often considered a first strike weapon because they are used to target the satellites used to detect and track ground based ICBM launches. Blind your enemy with an EMP that takes out their means to see what is happening and properly respond.

  19. At yet the Republicans in the U.S. still insist on supporting Russia, some will soon be calling for an aid package.

  20. So, no threat?

Shits on fire every other night there and their ships are being sunk in the black sea. [Kursk](https://twitter.com/NOELreports/status/1757894044691136994?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1757894044691136994%7Ctwgr%5E028785f5ba4aa6be911810618e5d4967cfd132db%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.redditmedia.com%2Fmediaembed%2F1ar02ux%3Fresponsive%3Dtrueis_nightmode%3Dfalse) oil depot is currently on fire. Maybe secure your own country before space travel?

    They are full of shit.

  21. Putin is def gonna take the world out with him before he dies we just sit and wait

  22. Can we have just one goddamn day without an existential threat?

  23. Awesome. Time for gloves off in Ukraine aid. All the things Russia has warned us not to send. No rules motherfucker? OK

  24. At this point the biggest threat to our security is the GOP making it political and Mike Turner’s big mouth.

  25. This can’t be right? Tucker Carlson *just* spoke to him. They worked out everything. Putins just a misunderstood nice guy. /s
