  1. >He said Cosla had recently made a counter offer to the Scottish government of a council tax cap of up to 5% in return for the money set aside for the freeze, but so far the Scottish government had rejected it.

This would have been the sensible approach.

  2. It’s not too late to reverse the council tax freeze.

Edit : A bit more on this.

Normal working people like me and you need council services. Council services are essentially just all of us clubbing together to do this collectively that’s massively more efficient, cheaper and practical than us all doing it as individuals.

Strangling councils means that we end up having to make up the gaps ourselves and that’s shite.

If we want to move away from the miserable direction that we’re headed – towards “libertarian” US style of “I’m not paying gubmint” then that’s what will happen with this.

If we want to live in a society where we’ve got more free time, where things are done efficiently and in a practical way then fund the fucking councils.

  3. This is an appalling way to treat local government, for entirely political purposes. If Westminster treated Holyrood the way this SNP government is treating councils, nationalists would be rightly outraged.

  4. Well…. As long as they declared it. WHO knows what would have happened if they never declared.

  5. I don’t understand this – if Council’s are unhappy with the Council tax freeze, don’t take the Scottish Government’s money and instead raise your Council tax as much as you’d like. They’d take the political hit for it, but you can’t have your cake and eat it.
