  1. Here’s an idea, maybe fund public services properly instead of half arsed measures a decade too late?

  2. In the grand scheme of things 66 million quid isn’t going to do much! You need long term investment to adequately deal with persistent ASB, joint funding for partnerships, money for schools and councils. But this makes a good headline nonetheless

  3. The amount of ASB these past years is something outside of the ordinary.

  4. Sticking plaster politics to borrow a phrase from Keir

  5. Who’d have thought that visible policing (perhaps with police who know the people in the area) might reduce anti-social behaviour…

  6. You could throw ten or a hundred million at it but the court outcomes will be the same, sentencing will be the same. Our judicial system is pathetic and the very last thing it does is deter anyone.

  7. Fucking stupid tories, take everything away from these already not much to lose kids and then wonder why they rob people and have no where to go, fuck this country

  8. “I mean it’s one arrest, Michael, what could it cost, £1 million?”

  9. They will probably use it to stop any demonstrations they don’t like for example, NHS nurses pay etc.

  10. We might notice a few more coppers on the streets, but I bet we wont see more convictions. Window dressing.

  11. If only local councils got a million a pop for social care and programs, but fuck it lets just arm the police better, that’ll stem the systemic problems in our country

  12. Perhaps use that money to give working class kids a future that doesn’t look like an absolute living hell

  13. This is actually nothing new. The Home Office have been running Safer Streets funding for a while now.

Police Crime Commissioners all got £1m each earlier this year, although often the money doesn’t go to any direct project funding, and because PCCs are elected roles, most of them land up using the money for more visual things that they can point to on a photo, CCTV, improved lighting etc.

  14. Its just money laundering ,police is completely useless

  15. Create a society that doesn’t care about the youth, don’t be surprised when the youth doesn’t care about society.

  16. Always money for policing without ever adressing the causes of crime.

  17. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to give a bunch of Britain first racists some baseball bats?

( I’ve stolen this joke. I can’t remember who said it though)

  18. It’s almost like closing youth centres, poorly planned urban sprawl, allowing for-profit motives to creep into education, and bleak job prospects has undesirable consequences where young people are concerned!

    Who would’ve thought?

  19. Where I’m from drug dealers flagrantly break laws infront of officers, how is a million gonna help a cowardice force.

  20. No doubt that’ll just line the pockets of those at the top and not filter down.

  21. Why not look long term and fund youth clubs so they’re not out on the street causing chaos?

  22. Would it maybe better to give local councils a million to run some youth clubs etc. I kinda feel that by depriving one you fuel the other.

  23. I had a terrible impression of the police growing up in the 80s and 90s, always getting stopped for no reason while out just playing with the lads. Then when I past my driving test getting pulled over once a week, getting searched. Once my family moved to a more affluent area I never had a problem.

I get the impression it depends on where you live to how you get perceived and treated.

  24. Ah, the classic conservative “oh shit, we’re way behind in the polls, better throw some policies out to appeal to the daily mail reading boomers quick”

  25. How about they stop employing them/that people who are useless

  26. The Icelandic Prevention Model is a great example of a long-term investment that many of our communities could benefit from. This is just lip service to a systemic problem bound up in the growing inequality and poverty across the islands.

  27. I mean would have helped if they didn’t destroy the majority of funded youth and social projects up and down the country but hey ho, I’m sure giving back a fraction of what you cut from public services in the first place is gonna be a magic fix.

  28. Won’t do a thing unless the police actually want to do their job.

I had a run in with local yobs before, provided cctv to the police (faces clearly seen) and their addresses, they all live on my street.

Police said they couldn’t identify who they were and when I asked if they visited the addresses, they said no because it would be “oppressive identification”. What the actual fuck is that

  29. Bet none of them will spend it on 33 x 30k wages for people to patrol problem areas

  30. Wow imagine what the Met police force responsible for the protection of around 9 000 000 people could do with a whole £1million.
