Ireland to give €20m to UNRWA, says Martin

  1. Not sure why this is being downvoted.

Politically a bit risky. If Israel is right, and UNRWA is riddled with Hamas members, then this will blow up. Far safer to give money to other UN organisations.

  2. Martin is seriously naive about the role of the Palestinians in their own demise here. UNRWA HQ in Gaza has an actual data centre HQ underneath it with power lines leading down from UNRWA to the tunnels of the terrorist facility which contain server farms and also, are storage for weapons.

  3. What a great use of the state coffers. This sub was just crying about the collapse of the Gaeltacht, I wonder how far 20 million could go to reinvigorate some of those areas instead of funding foreign issues?

  4. I don’t think anybody knows the full truth of how much the UNWRA is involved or not with Hamas yet, and continuing funding is probably for the best

But for the article not to mention the discovery of the tunnels And cables connecting to their HQ seems to be a bit weird. The evidence of that is far stronger than anything we’ve seen regarding employees, journalists were invited into the tunnels to see, which is rare for israel

It doesn’t even have a passing sentence regarding it, when that’s been the primary point of contention in the past week. Most other Irish news has an article about it, as did most global sites, RTE didn’t, and again fails to mention it

I’m not criticising Martin or DFA here, but RTE

  5. UNWRA has over 30,000 employees (mostly Palestinians) with 12,000 in Gaza and is one of the major aid suppliers in Gaza. I hate when the government make me agree with them, but Western states cutting off of UNWRA funding risks [catastrophy ](https://www.hrw.org/news/2024/02/12/unrwas-demise-would-be-catastrophic-gaza)

Israel listed 12 employees as taking part in the October 7 attack (9 of which were dismissed without [evidence ](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/09/head-of-unwra-says-he-followed-reverse-due-process-in-sacking-accused-gaza-staff) and two of which were already dead)

Of course UNWRA will have some members who are Hamas members when they’re recruiting from the local population. But cutting off one of the few relief providers in Gaza for a tiny minority of scumbags is absolutely abhorrent behaviour.

  6. Thread on this over on /r/Europe once again descending into anti-Irish hysteria.
