He says that the conscious part of the brain is not like the president in charge of a nation, but rather like the public relations officer of the White House who has very limited information on what’s actually going on. He calls this the “interpreter”. And so the interpreter spins stories that show the president in a good light, even making up things (I.e. confabulation) as needed. Normally we don’t figure this out, because the confabulations are believable. The trouble is, a failing brain and its failing interpreter will start giving bizarre explanations that become harder to believe. This has to be digested by his loyalists by explanatory confabulations by the supporters’ own interpreters. For example, he acts demented and confused but it’s all part of a cunning strategy to confuse his enemies. He doesn’t diss NATO allies because he admires Putin, it’s a cunning plan to strengthen nato. Whatever.

But what people DO remember is a brutal attack, something that forces your opponent to step back and explain themselves, to try to justify their position and their behavior. The undecideds respond strongly to an Attacker. It makes them seem confident.
