Brussels and Washington have issued sharp criticisms in response. That if one member is attacked, the others will come to its aid. Florian Neuhann reports. It was initially an election campaign speech like so many others by Donald Trump. The US Republican presidential candidate was in South Carolina. He complained about European NATO states that he thinks don’t contribute enough money.

It’s a regular topic in his speeches, but this time Trump went further. A president of a major NATO country once asked me: “If we didn’t pay and were attacked by Russia, would you protect us?” I said, “Absolutely not.” I would even encourage Russia to do whatever they want to do.

You have to pay. Encouraging Russia to attack is appalling and disturbing, said a spokesman for President Joe Biden. It also startled many in Europe, including Poland’s prime minister. Nothing can take the place of American might in terms of Western security. But we in Europe need to wake up.

It also naturally sparked condemnation from the NATO Secretary General: “If our allies fail to defend each other, it will jeopardise our overall security.” NATO’s statement is unusually harsh. It demonstrates the extent to which these shameful words are inciting unrest.

Even minor doubts about the USA’s assistance for European allies in the event of an attack pose a threat to coordinated deterrent efforts. The US election increasingly seems to be a vote on NATO’s future, and thus Europe’s security. The Israeli military claims to have located another Hamas tunnel in the Gaza Strip.

The explosive part is that it is allegedly located under the headquarters of the UN Palestinian relief agency UNRWA in Gaza City. The relief organisation said they were not aware of the 700-metre-long tunnel. Attacks continue in the Gaza Strip, in Khan Yunis and Rafah.

In the south, more than one million Palestinians have fled the ongoing violence. Alica Jung reports. Usama al-Najjar spends up to four hours a day trying to source a warm meal for his children in the south of Gaza. Everything you need to survive has to be painstakingly procured.

Our whole lives consist of standing in line. A line for bread, a line for food and drink. That’s our life now. He fled to Rafah with his wife, Nisma, and their five children after the Israeli army launched attacks in Khan Yunis.

They have no house, no money, and have to collect plastic to make a fire. There is no more wood in Rafah. Even the olive and lemon trees have been cut down. And, amid this hardship, there is growing anxiety about an Israeli ground offensive in Rafah.

The army wants to continue the fight against Hamas in Rafah but has not yet presented a plan for the evacuation of civilians. It has already combed through the north, as here in Gaza City, and has now come across new tunnels and a Hamas data centre.

It is located under the headquarters of the UN Palestinian Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNRWA, said he was unaware of the situation. Claims lives every day. Usama al-Najjar says this war has taken everything from his family. In Iran, tens of thousands celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. It was the culmination of years of simmering tensions. The Shah was forced to flee after mass riots throughout the country.

We need economic and cultural changes. I can’t say that everyone wants that. But the majority, 60 to 70%, do, and the system should listen to them. But such changes are not to be expected at the moment. Parliamentary elections will be held in Iran on March 1,

And dissatisfied and disillusioned people will vote with their feet. It is expected that around two-thirds of voters will not go to the polls. 45 years after the revolution, the rift between the regime and the people is deeper than ever before.

In several German cities, people have once again taken to the streets against right-wing extremism. On Munich’s Theresienwiese, tens of thousands made a silent statement with a sea of lights for democracy. In Dresden, shortly before the anniversary of the firebombing during World War II, nearly 1,000 right-wing extremists took part in a march.

Statt immer dem (durchaus verständlichen) Gedankengang zu folgen, dass man Verteidigung irgendwie gemeinsam organisieren müsse, sollte vielleicht mal Gedanken haben, das womöglich selbst zu organisieren. Denn wenn andere da nicht mitmachen, ist man halt auf sich selbst angewiesen. Das hat auch Vorteile.

Nur die USA haben von Anfang an den großteil der natostreitkräfte gestellt und der Rest hat sich im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes darauf ausgeruht. Jetzt regen sie sich auf, strecken ihre Brust raus und muckieren sich wie das den sein kann. Es ist ein Fakt das die europäischen Partner einen scheiss getan haben, ausgeruht haben sie sich und geglaubt das kann ewig so gehen. Aber wie es immer ist regen sich jetzt alle auf und wettern was das Zeug hält. Deutschland z.b. ist seinen Verpflichtungen gegenüber der Nato noch nie nachgekommen, das Land mit der höchsten Steuerlast in Europa, das Land mit den höchsten Steuereinnahmen in Europa weiß heute nichtmal wie sie ihren Haushalt richten sollen. Woran das liegt??? Weil sie unser Geld verbuttern in der ganzen Welt, wir uns die größte Regierung der Welt leisten und das Sozialamt der Welt sind. Wenn sie dafür angeprangert werden schwingen sie die Nazikeule, rufen zu Protesten auf und wehren sich auf perfideste weise. Hauptsache man muss nicht einsehen das man nur Fehler macht. Trump hat Recht, und Trump wird es den restlichen natoländern zeigen falls er gewählt wird. Die Zeit des des mitlaufens, des ausruhens auf anderen ist vorbei. Jetzt müsst ihre es nur noch den Steuerzahlern verklickern was für scheisse ihr gebaut habt und was der Steuerzahler jetzt wieder richten soll.

  15. Warum wird eigentlich über den Angriff Israels berichtet, aber nicht über die Raketen, die immernoch jeden Tag aus dem Gazastreifen auf Israel abgeschossen werden. Die Hamas hat es in den eigenen Händen das Leiden der eigenen Bevölkerung zu beenden. Aber das wollen sie nicht. Sie wollen, dass die Welt Israel beschuldigt. Ich bin überrascht, dass es so gut funktioniert.

  24. Trump ist echt clever! Das obligatorische und geheuchelte Krakeele in den Nato-Mitgliedsländern stört ihn nicht, auch nicht das der Democrats in den USA. Er weiß, dass die US-Bürger sich am weltweiten militärischen Engagement der USA stören, insbesonders, dass es sie Steuergelder kostet, das in den USA besser angelegt wäre. Deshalb richtet er abermals den Focus auf die Ausgaben der USA für die Nato, und darauf, dass die Bündnispartner mehr zahlen sollen bzw. überhaupt zahlen sollen.

    Aufgrund der geographischen Lage der USA braucht die USA auch keine Nato! Die Europäer hingegen sehr wohl. Die sollten nun lernen, dass sie für ihre Sicherheit selbst aufkommen müssen, ohne die Unterstützung der USA. Vielleicht hilft ihnen das auch dabei, zu erkennen, dass Russland nicht als Feind angesehen werden muss. Zieht sich die Nato zurück bzw. löst sich auf, gibt es für Russland keine Bedrohung mehr. Und auf dem gesamten europäischen Kontinent kann Frieden herrschen! Die ganze Rüstung, insbesondere das Wettrüsten kann man sich dann sparen.
