> Jurassic Park was a box office beast, although it may have slowed Laura Dern’s course to an Academy Award and the slew of nominations she now garners. She recently told The Times, “The age gap between me and Sam Neill was completely inappropriate,” which she only realized after the film’s release when an article pointed out the patriarchal dynamics.
Holy shit, Dern was 23 and Neill was 42 while filming Jurassic Park. And we all just accepted that as normal.
YES! there’s just a natural chemistry most people have with people their age, Actors included. One of my favorite things about current mcu is the casting in the Spider-Man movies , everyone portraying a kid is born in 96 or 97 and the dialogue just meshes better in those school scenes
She’s way up her own ass with a bad take.
In before a later article or social media wave complains about ‘Why can’t younger adult male actors and older female actors as characters have a relationship on screen?’ comes along.
Was age ever implied though? As others pointed out, she does not look that young and Sam Neil doesn’t look too old. Idfk
lol guess the age gap discourse has gotten so ridiculous that now we need be worried about fictional age gaps. Just lol
I watched a few minutes of this by accident while flipping through channels and she had some of the worst acting I’ve seen on TV in a long time.
I submit “As Good as it Gets” with Nicholson and Hunt. 26 year gap.
Are Adults only allowed to interact or be interested in each other if their age is close enough? The only time age gaps matter is when 1 is underaged.
People are running out of things to fight about. Now gotta worry about age gaps in a movie. She sure as shit didn’t protest those cheques.
The new Fantastic Four cast fits the bill.
I thought we weren’t supposed to judge if they are both consenting adults?
We don’t need “age parity”, there is a need to be realistic for the characters and the options that would be available to them.
Yeah! Like how is Ryan Gosling Ken but Britney and Christina are too old to be Barbie??!!
Buncha R Kellys up in these comments.
Addressing the age gap in on-screen couples is overdue but “hurting Hollywood”, come on man, give over
How about just picking the best actors for the roles instead of being consumed with things like age, race, sexual orientation, etc?
54 year old woman bitter that successful men her age are with 25 year olds while no young guy is even looking at her
Age gaps? Sounds like like nepotism machine is lacking. Hire some more extras from no-name talent agency’s that might offset the age average.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson has entered the chat.
This is all stupid, i get it sometimes its ideal and sometimes it doesn’t matter it might work regardless of the age gap.
Age gaps exist in Real life, dont see how some Films are any different…
People have to much time on their hands to focus on these things
I missed any romance in Jurassic Park. The only thing I remember Dern’s character doing was digging those eggs out of the dino doo doo.
But wouldn’t age parity hurt the prospects for older male actors? Because ‘clearly’ they’re not gonna suddenly start hiring older female actresses.

This is something i notice more and more as I get older. It’s becoming intolerable.
Why would you try to homogenize art? Why not let the story and characters dictate something deeply poetic and universally true? Do they want to go back and make Lolita a middle-aged housewife? The whole point of the story is to peer into the disturbing traits of man and society to ultimately illuminate and have us question our behavior and the existence of things. This is art. FOH.
Or we could just let grown adults do what they want in the bedroom 🤷
I used to get Farr confused with Sarah Clarke. Clarke is married to Xander Berkeley, who’s 16 years her elder. That’s all I got.
But really, even as a 12-year-old when Jurassic Park came out, I just looked at it as Alan Gran was having an affair with a former student, which I knew even then was a thing. If he treated her well, then who really cared. Laura Dern looks like she came out of the womb at 30 and has stayed there her whole life anyway.
We are all going to still watch these shows. And with all the plastic surgery in Hollywood, unless you tell people the age difference , most of us couldn’t tell.
It’s not about who looks younger or older. Roles written for middle aged (30+) women are often filled by someone younger. Not so often for men though.
It’s a very old Hollywood trope. Look at films from way back and young starlets are dating men that look like their fathers.
There has been more equality for older actresses, but it’s an uphill battle.
I wonder if this is about age parity and not about employment for actresses over 40 years old. Hollywood seems to only want to employ women before 25 or 30, including pairing them with 40, 50, and 60 year old men.
Personally, I’m tired of seeing mid-40s men play the love interest of mid-20s women.
It’s distracting. And it’s not like there’s a shortage of either mid-40s actresses or mid-20s actors so unless the age gap is going to be acknowledged (or god forbid pertinent to the plot) it doesn’t seem particularly necessary either.
Real life has age gaps. Men like younger women for their looks and Women like older men for their money. Women benefit from this system when they’re young and then complain about it when they’re old.
