  1. But didn’t the Scottish government NOT use Whatsapp for official business? Surely that means that they don’t need to be handed over.

  2. Inquiry will be in Wales soon.

We already know Labour have deleted messages, and Drakeford lied about having WhatsApp on his phone.

Will be interesting to see how this issue will be spun there.

It will also be interesting to see the extent of communication between Labour in Wales and their bosses in Westminster. I really hope ALL messages by members of the Shadow Cabinet have been handed over so they can decide what is relevant to the Inquiry.

  3. >The FoI request asked for a “monthly breakdown of the number of WhatsApp messages sent or received by former first minister Nicola Sturgeon which were transferred to the Scottish Government’s eRDM system” eRDM (Electronic Records and Document Management system).

We already knew the answer to this, because it would have been handed over to the inquiry already if they were transferred.

But it’s kind of missing the point, WhatsApp messages weren’t directly transferred, they were part of the decision making process and the formal notes were transferred.

A bit like asking if someone had saved a scan of their back of a fag packet calculations when you’re more interested in the more refined calculation. But the key thing is in this, we need to see how they arrived at those decisions. 15 years ago, these discussions would be had around the “water cooler” and no notes would be made. But we’re in 2023 and times have changed. I think we’re discovering in all of this that there is a need for politicians to treat messaging as part of the formal debate.
