No way I am going to jail over this and certainly not gonna double down when all I did the first time was some enabling. I din’t get into congress to go to prison, I got into congress so I could enrich myself AND avoid going to prison”

  8. Are people see the writing on the wall? Why would you give up cushy and prestigious jobs like this if you didn’t have internal polling showing that you’re going to get shellacked in November? I guess they’ve probably got their sights on the private sector where they can get paid even more to do even less so maybe that’s more plausible.

  10. These guys know that the GOP should be scheduling a vote on Ukraine aid. The GOP is losing some of its most responsible members, that might be described as pragmatic conservatives interested in governance. I wonder why all the serious GOP members are leaving???

  12. The thing I don’t understand is not seeing that you have a real opportunity if you 1) care about your constituents and 2) want to govern.

    The republicans have the smallest possible majority. You could effectively take control of congress by agreeing to caucus with the democrats, in exchange for them throwing some pork in the direction of your home districts and for them staying away from the big dog whistle issues on both sides.

    But no, let’s just resign. There is clearly nothing that could be done. There is a lot of *real* work that needs to be done right now. Why not take the next 11 months to do some of it, and not just bow out because your party is being a bunch of idiots.

  34. Before anyone gets excited, none of these seats will flip to Dems. Rogers’ district is R+8, Gallagher’s district is R+10, and Green’s is R+10
