They’re dumping sewage because for the past 26 years they’ve invested nearly nothing into new infrastructure and paying themselves massive bonuses. The government just recently had to bail them out so they can carry on business as usual, destroying just about everything they can touch for pennies.
Don’t pay for your human rights. Don’t pay for the waterways of this country to be destroyed by profiteers.
This is brexit the Tory hardcore want. All environmental regulation and enforcement thrown away. A right wing libertarian paradise.
Sewage is an issue which does cut through with right wing voters on the doorstep.
Not enough to convert them, but the state of the local rivers is definitely something most “small c” conservatives value on a personal level.
It needs pushing more, but sadly is rarely featured in most opposition campaigns.
It’s worth noting that plenty of the water companies are owned by international investors and equity banks (around 70% of the total ownership according to one article) that simply don’t give a damn about the job they do. What does it matter to the Malaysian corporation who own Wessex Water if they pump sewage into rivers in Southern England for example?
The Environment Agency meanwhile has been gutted in it’s enforcement capability by a decade of Tory cuts and most recently has told it’s staff to ignore low levels of pollution because it can’t afford to investigate them. Apparently the average farm in the UK should expect a visit to ensure they aren’t polluting waterways once every 263 years. At the start of the year the head of agency warned people to be cautious about swimming in English rivers because they cannot guarantee it’s safe.
