Canada: Applications for English-speaking universities fall as Quebec raises tuition fees

In Toronto Ontario Alexa greenspoon is soon graduating from high school her dream is to study political science and philosophy in one of Montreal’s most prestigious schools Mill University but that dream is now Out Of Reach next year tuition fees are nearly doubling for out of Province and international students

It’s making Migel um much less likely for it to be an option for me as well as for my peers it’s really limiting a lot of people’s opportunities a lot of my friends are telling me different stuff about how they they can’t even afford to apply because then they’re wasting the

Money on applications when they don’t think that there’s a very there’s a very big likelihood of them even being able to attend the University at this point essentially it’s just putting a bad name on Quebec as a whole and it ALS also isn’t considering that a lot of Canada

Does speak French a lot of out of Province people do speak French the Quebec government decided to increase tuition fees but only for the province’s largest anglophone universities migil and Concordia however all three English language universities will have to comply with new language requirements 80% of students must graduate with an

Intermediate level of French proficiency officials say the move is necessary to better Finance frankophone universities and improve the use of the language in Montreal English speaking universities alone collected around $282 million in additional revenue generated by tuition fees from International students out of a total of 47 million for all Quebec

Universities however the public financing of universities has not been adjusted to take into account this additional Revenue the Quebec government is sending a clear message not only are we ending a policy that subsidizes at a Los meaning students who do not end up staying here but we’re also slowing the decline of

The French language in Montreal the higher education system plays a key role in reversing this trend the news took many by surprise prompting an uproar among some student unions and the opposition in Quebec it’s totally irresponsible for the government and the higher education minister to put this measure in place

33,6 18 in a month this is the most popular petition submitted to the National Assembly it was presented by students across Quebec the fervent opposition spilled over to the streets of Montreal Mill University officials call the policy unfair and a threat to their institution this leaves us with fees

That are twice the amount that a student in Toronto would pay or in British Columbia for most programs they discipline you add the obligation to teach French to a level five to students 80% of the students and on top of that the letter that I received from the

Minister it actually threatens that we will impose further Financial penalties on the universities if they fail to achieve 80% a Target that’s unachievable if the government actually sat down and took the trouble to understand what it takes to take people to that level of French 80% of the people I think they

Would not be saying that what I’m seeing is a lack of effort to understand to soften the financial blow Miguel and Concordia have both announced new bseries for outof province students Concordia is offering up to $4,000 for applicants with high academic performance we’ll talk about it today

It’s the article that we’re working on for the European review on International students and recruitment in Canada the mood is different here at this French language University some are celebrating the fact that they will soon receive more financing the government promising they will take money from the more popular English universities to inject

Into the French higher education system in the international vision for the Coalition air of Quebec the government says we’re going to add a notion of nationalism or linguistic identity so the idea is to accumulate more money from International students but they have to be French speaking

But Bea wet says the government did not foresee that the policy could end up making enemies in the rest of Canada students from Quebec could also soon face steeper tuition rates in other provinces it remains less expensive than universities with a similar reputation in the United States we’re talking about

Almost half as much sometimes twice three times less so obviously Migel would be able to replace Canadian or Kea students with International students I think at this level there’ll be a change in enrollment but I don’t think it will affect the university disproportionately I think Quebec made this Choice without necessarily thinking

What would happen if the other provinces did the same for example if Ontario says well you decided to charge a premium for students who come from us but we’re going to do the same for students from Quebec Miguel says it’s already feeling the impact of the government’s tuition

Hikes they’re reporting a 10 to 20% decrease in the number of applications to undergraduate programs in 2024 a small Saving Grace the increase does not apply to master’s degrees and phds

In Quebec, a reform by the provincial government has sparked anger from its two most prestigious Anglophone universities, McGill and Concordia. Undergraduate tuition fees will increase by more than 30 percent for Canadians from other provinces, while a new tax will be levied on these institutions for each international student. The measure is intended to better fund Francophone institutions but also aims for a “linguistic rebalancing,” according to Quebec’s government. McGill and Concordia universities, whose reputation attracts students from all over the world, are seeing a drop in enrolment applications from Canadian students outside Quebec, as well as from international students. Under a bilateral agreement, Belgian and French students are spared from the reform. Our correspondents report.

  1. Welcome to the reality of non US/non UK/ non European citizens where they want you to pay twice or three times more as a national/european lol

  2. This is why I hate living here a lot of times. Like I wish I could move out but moving out was never an option and I really struggled more then the average kid in learning French in Quebec and I still have that struggle and as an adult. And again I wish I could leave but I really can't I am stuck here 🙁

  3. Reading the comments. Looks like the Quebecois know nothing about the transfer payments that the have provinces have to send to Quebec. BC, Alberta,Ontario , Saskatchewan, Newfoundland &Labrador all have to make transfers to Quebec. Quebec received 14,037 Million dollars for fhe 2023-2024 fiscal year. Why the hell do you think its ok to double charge especially the have provinces while you take their equalization payments? Canadian taxpayers pay for the university subsidies. Quebec cant afford to subsidize their own university. Whats wrong with that girl applying to a Quebec university? Her parents indirectly paid for it in their taxes. Stop trying to squeeze even more money out of Canadians from the have provinces. You got enough. You dont need more. Thats why the applicants dropped. We aint giving you anymore money than we have to. As a Bc resident, Im tired of paying for my own tuition as well as the tuition of entitled Quebecois

  4. As someone who went to Montreal for work, Quebec is nothing like the rest of Canada imo, it should just be called west France, New France, Franida, or no speak English here. So many people there spoke absolutely 0 English or extremely broken English with a heavy French accent. Compare this with Vancouver where EVERYONE speaks English and I heard 0 French. Idk about you but that's a pretty clear indication that the people are not integrated well and this video/news is further proof that it's intentional and by design. They have no wish to join rest of Canada and USA and reject any attempt to give up their French heritage and culture. Quebec isn't Canada, it's France.

  5. Real solution here is to just let Quebec become it's own country so we don't need to associate Canadians with Quebecians anymore but then the next issue is that we will be living next to French proxy state and we can see from current geopolitical tidings that it doesn't favor the west to have the French sitting close to us because it's quite murky whose side they're on.

  6. Très bonne chose, les pauvres étudiants de Mcgill devront apprendre un peu de français. Ils me font de la peine, eux qui se sont toujours crissé du français. Bien fait pour eux et Vive le Québec francophone !! ⚜️⚜️⚜️

  7. If they have to raise tuition fees for students in colleges and universities in Canada, then it is not worth to study in Canada. Canada government MUST remember that there are other much better Colleges and universities in the world. Like Harvard, Boston University, Oxford, University of London, and so on…

  8. Ridiculous move by Quebec…

    Where are the feds?
Too busy trying to regulate AB while QC does and has always done whatever the f*ck it pleases within this federation.

  9. Quebec education is highly subsidized by Quebec workers' tax money. So why should out-of-province, and out-of-country students pay the same rates as those who are paying taxes (and a lot of them)? And what about learning the province's only official language, French?

  10. As a former American alumni of McGill (I was a graduate student there), I went to Québec in order to learn French, as did other Americans and some out of province Canadians (from Alberta mostly), so I think the French language requirement could also be a draw. Learning another language, especially a world language like French, is incredibly useful.

  11. It is a good move There are only benefits in learning other languages eg French
So students should willingly embrace and enjoy learning as it will pay off in the long run

  12. This is coercion and discrimination against the English speaking minority in Quebec! If French has any viability as a language it shouldn’t need to be propped up by the government

  13. Quebec has attacked everything English in their bigoted pursuit of FRENCH ONLY. Yet they demand the lion share of Canadian Provincial Equalitating Payments…
    Talk about a dog in a manger.😂😂😂

  14. Seems like the Canadian government needs to get involved. The provincial government is in effect discriminating against English-speaking Canadian citizens. All to promote the speaking of Quebec French.

  15. I wish I knew French. I live in Louisiana. We let it fade from our culture. Some speak French in the south but most do not. It is a big part of our history we have lost. Do not lose your history Quebec. It is great to know English, but know French also. Don’t be like me 😂

  16. If the other provinces do the same for Quebec students it will not matter, the main goal is to protect french inside of Quebec and whatever happens in the other provinces is not the government concerns.

  17. Universities in Ontario have no more money and will reduce the number of students . Canada is reducing the number of international stidents accross CAnada and students have at least $20,000 in a bank account before applying for s stident visa.

  18. Education is a provincial juridiction. The governement of Quebec already give to all universities in Quebec $ 17,000. per student . . It is normal if you are not from Quebec you need to pay more . Montreal is not expensive compared to Toronto or VAncouver . Montreal have the best universities and the best quality of life in CAnada .
