  1. Neither can I, but nobody gives a fuck about that. Welcome to the real world

  2. > He described the role as a “full-time job on a part-time salary”.
    > “If it’s a full-time role, it removes the option of going out and earning a salary, so how are you supposed to survive unless you are either retired or independently wealthy?”

Pretty much tells it all. Although it’s not supposed to be a full time job, he’s still earning pretty close to the median salary and says he can’t live on it. How does he expect those who actually work full time on that salary to manage?

  3. He could save a few quid if he stopped badly dyeing his hair

  4. Yes, Britain pays people shockingly little. Tony Blair started to address that back in 1998, but we don’t like him here.

  5. I mean fair enough, you can’t expect to be attracting the right talent for a job that’s only paying 30k

You pop over to the careers subs and you’ll have everyone telling fresh grads to not accept an offer that low.

  6. I know that some people instinctively want their politicians to be living in a cardboard box and subsisting off Pot Noodle, but there’s a reason why the men who risked everything campaigning for their right to vote in the 19th century demanded a liveable wage for politicians.

Think about it for half a second. If a politician’s wage isn’t enough to comfortably live on, then the only people who will take office will be those who are independently wealthy, then we’re back to the bad old days.

  7. Fewer councils. We should just have NE, NW, W Midlands, E Midlands, E, SE, SW and London.

But pay 5x more to attract much better qualified talent. Drive a more private sector attitude with KPi bonuses.

  8. I sympathised until he called that a part time salary.

    Get out.

If its not enough to live on then thats a problem that needs fixing on a very wide scale.

  9. He’s complaining as if he is meant to be in a full time role.

If he can’t handle the workload then he’s not managing the role well.

  10. You couldn’t get me doing that job for 60k let alone 30!

  11. He needs to change his lifestyle many people try to make do with a lot less than £30k

  12. I think politicians should be much better paid.

On the condition that it’s their only source of income.

  13. And yet I’m on 9000 in benefits and I manage to scrape by. If he can’t use £30k a year responsibly at his age there’s a problem.

  14. Has he given up all good things that make life worth living and tried being miserable like many many people are?

  15. Dunno why such instances always rile people up. Everyone has their own life circumstances, just because some people can get by on less doesn’t mean £30k is a sustainable salary for everyone.

As a sole earner, in a lot of UK areas £30k doesn’t provide you the financial freedom to live by yourself. I can understand why a grown middle aged man would find such income unsustainable.

  16. No S*; I lived in Cheshire and lived paycheck to paycheck on 24k, scraping by. Skipping meals because the train tickets to Manchester were ripping me off… And that was in 2017! – My spouse and I got desperate and moved to Denmark. Having disposable income from day 1 here, for the first time in our lives was life changing.

People are getting ripped off by the rich in the UK
