  1. Norway always has to win these kind of rankings, don’t they.

  2. Ah yes, the infamous Greek democracy trumping Belgium’s. Also Serbia tailing with Croatia despite recent mass protests and call out from European parliament regarding election scams.

  3. How Lithuania isint full democracy, when every 4 years we get diffrent kind of goverment. Same party NEVER won 2 election in a row.. 😂

  4. Russia is a terrorist state murdering Europeans daily for more than 2 years. Putin to hell!

  5. How are 90% of those ‘full democracy’ when they have no proportional representation and their media are all owned by the same handful of people? Propaganda map.

  6. The criteria of this index are generally sensible, but it does have some oddities due to its British origin: it punishes Belgium for having mandatory voting, while having no penalty for the UK for its dumpster fire of a voting system.

  7. How is Austria more democratic than Spain and France

  8. I think Serbia got to good a grade tbh. We’re not nearly as transparent as Croatia for example. Hope stuff gets better here soon! The GDP rise is good and all, but I think the current party has been in power for too long. They are not starting, but are taking it for granted for some time now. The system needs to be held accountable for checks and balances.

  9. It always impresses me to see Germany up that high in these kinda democracy/ development/ social rankings. It’s part of the top 20 biggest countries inhabitants-wise and most times it is the best ranked country among these in almost every category. Usually smaller countries (at least in western/ northern Europe) tend to have the better system but Germany is always an exception. Keep it up!

  10. Portugal sounds right.
No justice system, little economic freedom.

  11. Belgium has a bad ranking because of mandatory voting (you still can vote blanco). Ridiculous.

  12. Who is that delusional that gave hungary 6.72?

    Should be well below 5.

  13. Belarus should get an award of some kind, it’s not easy for an European country to score worse than Russia.

  14. How is it even possible that Romania and Croatia have a lower index than hungary who proudly presents itself as an “iliberal democracy” and has the same prime minister FOR 18 YEARS out of almost 35 years since communism fell in hungary

Here in Romania our democracy may be shaky (mostly because of our horrible corruption level and failed attempts at destroying all NGOs) but at least we still have somewhat of an opposition in the parliament, however we are closer than ever to become a second hungary

  15. When it comes to democracy I honestly don’t buy it that we score as “flawed democracy”. Even if barely.

There’s so much shit I could write about CZ, but even as a perpetual critic, I’ve never felt even in the slightest that it’s anything but a democratic country. Not even a hint. Unless you consider old people voting for dumb self centered stuff a flaw in democracy, where I think that’s inherently a part of it.

We have had populist takeover attempts in the 2010s with all the typical crap like billionaires buying media, they tried their shit, lost every single election in a row for several years now, peacefully handed over power, not a hint of problems. They will get their turn next election cycle again and then they’ll be voted out again. Not too different from the Nordics where they’ve had populists do this too. Plenty of bulldog investigat8vr journalism too.

If anything, that shows resilience to autocrats. One that countries like Slovakia and Hungary do not have. Or even countries like the US where one election result lead to insurgency and election contests.

It’s a different story about corruption, but that’s a separate topic. One that’s often associated, but not inherently.

I’ll check the methodology and see what caused it.

Edit: ok it counts corruption as well. I disagree that it should, rather have it as separate index, but that explains the small discrepancy.

  16. If you dont want to add Turkey then do it like Russia. Only add the European part.

  17. At heart I feel we deserve more than 5.06 but reality is that bunch of stuff happens and is being conducted behind the curtain

  18. I always appreciate maps that say Czechia instead of Czech republic

  19. I actually learned that the petroleum is managed commonly for the future generations: The government realises that its oil reserves won’t last forever, and so Norway invested a large portion of the surplus revenue from its petroleum sector to the Government Pension Fund Global for future generations. This is the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world, worth USD$1.3 trillion in assets in 2019. (Source: Earth.org)
Interesting. That should make a nation peacefully democratic.

  20. Hmmm.. I thought Iceland would get the highest rating. Rather shocked about B&H.

  21. Switzerland doesn’t score 10 mainly because participation in elections and referendums is generally quite low, which is sad.

  22. This Democracy Index is nothing more than propaganda:

[The Economist Democracy Index – Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Economist_Democracy_Index)

    > The methodology for assessing democracy used in this democracy index is according to [Economist Intelligence Unit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economist_Intelligence_Unit “Economist Intelligence Unit”) which is part of the [Economist Group](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economist_Group “Economist Group”), a UK-based private company, which publishes the weekly newspaper [The Economist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Economist “The Economist”).

    > ## Criticism
    >
    > Investment analyst Peter Tasker has criticised the _Democracy Index_ for [lacking transparency and accountability](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Economist#Editorial_anonymity “The Economist”) beyond the numbers. To generate the index, the Economist Intelligence Unit has a scoring system in which various experts are asked to answer 60 questions and assign each reply a number, with the weighted average deciding the ranking. However, the final report does not indicate what kinds of experts, nor their number, nor whether the experts are employees of the Economist Intelligence Unit or independent scholars, nor the nationalities of the experts.[[15]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Economist_Democracy_Index#cite_note-criticism1-19)
