  1. Um the contract allows them to pull out at any time and face no consequences.

  2. “EDF takes €12.9bn hit after Hinkley Point C delays and cost overruns”

But passes costs on to customers. So no worries there.

  3. Wait until we add Sizewell to this mess. EDF are making a fortune off the taxpayers, despite the fact that their nuclear power stations are suffering issues in the likes of France and Finland too. The government will not look for new bidders on future projects either because there just are none available. We need to stop relying on foreign, state-owned companies for our infrastructure.

  4. Shout out to the French taxpayer for subsidising our nuclear sector.

  5. You wouldn’t believe the waste on this project… I worked there for 3 years and it was draining…

  6. Don’t worry, the contract also states that they will recoup their costs through higher prices for the energy produced. We – the bill payers will end up paying for it thanks to our short sighted governments just like the PFI debacle.

  7. Love how we can’t build anything, not even fill in potholes in this country.

  8. I’m sure the board of the Contractor companies are having a lovely Holidays while they wait for their new Lambos to be delivered. No doubt bitching about how much tax they had to pay.

I wish we could actually see what’s going on. Stories of these Gov projects being draw out and over budget are not a coincidence. See: “Teeside Freeport” for proof of that.

  9. We need nuclear, it’s clear that it’s one of the pathways forward until we have some form of better battery storage or renewable options (or fusion but, er, we’ll call a rain check on that one). We we were the first to build a commercial reactor and hook it up to the grid and subsequently built more and advanced our tech as we went along. Unfortunately, Chernobyl and disinformation from oil/gas/greenpeace/CND thumped public opinion and led to a political choice to halt further expansion and pull investment in the industry.

That has now left us in the position that we have no domestic capability to design, manufacture and commission a large scale nuclear reactor (we can do small but they go on subs). That means asking foreign companies who can put us over a barrel both economically and in less savoury ways (see China, although that’s not saying France wouldn’t either). We simply do not have enough experienced people in the industry in more or less every department and discipline and a large chunk of the reason has been government’s lack of investment over the last 30+ years allowing experience to simply retire out. They’ve realised they’re in a real pickle now and it will cost a fortune as demand remains high and supply is low.

In other news, it’s a very good time to get into the industry and despite the usual UK’s dismal salaries, nuclear is pretty good and you’ll always be in demand. The future does look bright but it will take time to rebuild a national capability the likes we saw in the 50s and 60s.

  10. Thank fuck for privatisation, otherwise taxpayers would be on the hook for that.
