I may be wrong, but I think the King’s Head was once owned by the executioner of Charles I. Its his ‘head’ referenced in the name. Given OC was mostly responsible for the decapitation, it makes thematic sense that his portrait is in the pub, even if it makes no common sense.
I guess it fits with the name, Cromwell overthrew Charles I and later executed him. Charles I is depicted in their logo or at least I think it’s him. But yeah, still odd.
Well I suppose he had a hand in attracting alot of immigrants there for a period!
A curse upon you Oliver Cromwell, you who raped our Motherland
I hope you’re rotting down in hell for the horrors that you sent
To our misfortunate forefathers whom you robbed of their birthright
“To hell or Connaught” may you burn in hell tonight
He was misunderstood
Teaching my students in Germany not to bring up Cromwell in Ireland because of reasons and now this… Learning something new everyday…
As the link shows, the pub has a lot of history, and the interior is decorated to reflect that. The portrait of Cromwell is just one of those decorations. It doesn’t celebrate him.
I have always wondered why Richard Harris portrayed him in the movie of the same name.
Cromwell (and many others) thought of us as subhuman scum. He directly and indirectly carried out murder, theft and genocide of the Irish people. May he burn in hell (lol). But this document is historical and worthy of keeping and putting him/them on display. Own it. There’s always something to learn from historical documents. And the history of Cromwell should never be forgotten. Keep it on the wall.
For example: I learned today from this post that the Earl Spencer commissioned a collection of images including this one. I wonder which earl, probably Diana’s great grandfather.
They should balance it out by putting a little picture of him in the urinals. Ya know, like the little flies that they have
Who do you think gave them the Kings head?
I find that offensive as an Irish person. I don’t give a fuck about the history of the building. That shitbird should be on no wall in this country. I believe his head ended up on a sharp spike.
Bold. We hate him in the England, Wales and Scotland but in Ireland he’s beneath contempt
Ewwwwwwwwww
Unless this is the pub dart board, the landlord should be fucking ashamed.
The only place I want to see Cromwell’s picture is on toilet paper.
