“A combination of cameras and weight sensors establish what customers have picked up and they are then charged for products directly through the supermarket’s app when they leave.”
How the fuck is that supposed to work.
Nice! Although I do prefer Lidl to Aldi
Nope. Not for me. No thanks.
I like people, supermarkets are desolate enough these days.
Might go if they have slot machines /s
On one hand anything is good that reduces the time I have to spend grocery shopping. For me it is an hour-long ordeal at least twice a week involving getting to/from the shop and un/loading the bags. On the other hand using their app sounds like a horrible idea. There is no way Aldi won’t use it to track/profile and target people. It’s too easy to target-advertise while watching what sticks, create profiles and databases of customers. Even compared to Amazon daily grocery shopping tracking will be a different kind of animal. No way will a company like Aldi be able to keep that database only to themselves, especially several years down the road. It will be too valuable to too many actors with too many resources.
I went to the Amazon Fresh on Euston Road in London. It’s the same checkout less store idea. The system managed to track everything I picked up including carrier bags that were hanging on the side on on of the aisles.
All you needed to do was scan your Amazon app when you entered, pick-up what you wanted and leave. In about 30mins you get the itemised receipt in an email. The only draw backs were it was more expensive that regular stores and you can only shop as a single person.
