Fears over disqualified drivers behind the wheel as 76% ignore orders to surrender licences

  1. We need a massive rollout of ANPR. Tax, Insurance and NCT discs are a 50 year old method of proving compliance when a simple IT system can be rolled out to every squad car in the country to replace it.

  2. We live in an age were it would be possible to stop you even opening the drivers side door if you had a ban, no insurance etc.

  3. Whether they surrender the license makes no difference. It’s not a car key.

If they’re going to drive while banned, they’re going to drive while banned.

  4. One workable solution to discourage disqualified drivers from driving is to jail them for a fixed minimum term if they are caught driving during a ban.

If left to judges discretion, a couple of sob stories and paid for psychologists reports will get them off with a slap on the wrist. Minimum sentencing requirements will take pressure off the judges in dealing with public opinion also.

Other commenters have made observations about the gardai using integrated systems to passively check the insurance, tax and NCT of vehicles without necessarily pulling them over. This won’t deal with disqualified drivers driving because the vehicle could be insured in somebody else’s name. They would have to get pulled over to get caught out.

Bar having to get someone to hospital quickly in an emergency in a remote place or something equally unlikely. It takes a special kind of stupid to drive whilst banned.
