  1. > India will invite private firms to invest about $26 billion in its nu clear energy sector to increase the amount of electricity from sources that don’t produce carbon dioxide emissions, two government sources told Reuters.

Curious investments, since India has had fuel problems in the past which have reduced their capacity factors, though it is getting better. We’ll see if these companies bite, since other forms of generation are more economical.

Sorry for the annoying formatting. It’s necessary because automod still removes the “n” word because of bad faith brigaders from that one subreddit.

  2. It’ll be interesting to see if and why India will invest heavily in nuclear. They’re scaling renewables a lot more than they are nuclear.

    – [Share of electricity production from nuclear](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/share-electricity-nuclear?tab=chart&country=~IND) (2.49% in 2022)
    – [Share of electricity production from solar and wind](https://ourworldindata.org/explorers/energy?tab=chart&time=2010..latest&country=OWID_WRL~USA~OWID_EUR~CHN~JPN~IND~DEU~FIN~DNK~NLD~ESP&Total+or+Breakdown=Select+a+source&Energy+or+Electricity=Electricity+only&Metric=Share+of+total&Select+a+source=Solar+and+wind) (8.9%, 2022)

Regarding the obligatory “but the sun doesn’t alway shine, and the wind doesn’t always blow!” there are countries with far worse insolation getting a far higher percentage of their electricity from solar+wind than India is now. So India could double or triple that, at the very least, before needing to add significant storage. In addition to which they have those mountains, thus they have geography suitable to some pumped hydro.

I suspect in the time it’ll take to build a couple of nuclear plants, solar and wind would have doubled 3-4 times over. Probably more cheaply.

  3. …why waste money on nuclear when batteries + solar do the same thing for way cheaper? Also – for the base load obsessed – I say to you “just buy more batteries then”.
