  1. Almost a third of the MPs attempting to water down or delay new laws to better protect England’s 11 million private renters are landlords, analysis has revealed.
MPs including Bob Blackman, Nick Fletcher, Marco Longhi and Geoffrey Clifton-Brown are pressing for changes to the long-awaited renters’ reform bill, which will ban no-fault evictions. They want to make it easier for landlords to throw out tenants for antisocial behaviour instead.
The MPs are among 47 Conservative backbenchers who have signed amendments that housing campaigners fear will “gut” legislation crucial to improving rights for the one in five households in England who rent privately. There are also fears that the reforms will not happen before the general election.
According to an analysis of the register of members’ financial interests by the Renters’ Reform Coalition, a campaign group, 14 of the MPs backing the changes to the bill are landlords, renting out a combined 52 homes.

  2. It doesnt really matter if it passes without their amendments. There will always be an “out” installed for them in some way. If you have a hand in making the law you cant really break the law

  3. Hopefully by the end of the year we’ll be seeing a lot less of Jacob Rees-Metternich

  4. I’m actually surprised it’s that low. I figured maybe half of all MPs were landlords, regardless support for weakening tenant rights and even regardless of party.

  5. They already have an out, just have to say they are selling the property as long as they follow X Y Z and pretend they are then can remove tenants. Then turn around and say I changed my mind and rent it out again or do whatever they wish as it’s their property. No fault evictions will still exist in all but name just with few more steps. It’s more just too seem like they’re doing something more then anything else. Same with bully XL or knifes or name a million other things always a loophole.

  6. The reform is honestly the bare minimum for renters. But they won’t even let us have that.

The ToS prevents me from saying what would happen to these MPs in a just world.

  7. Almost three thirds of Tory MPs are… well, I don’t want to get banned.

  8. Theres such an obvious conflict of interest here that landlord MPs really shouldnt be allowed.

  9. The Tories have become too corrupt and now the country really needs strict laws around MPs and outside earnings. As far as being landlords, anyone who has a stake in the game shouldn’t play.  These MPs are voting on things that directly benefit them financially.  In the private sector we call this conflict of interest and they don’t get to vote.

Beyond that, it’s crazy I have to turn down a Christmas hamper my customer wants to give me out of appreciation but MPs are being openly bribed for contracts and future executive jobs. We need to pay them a salary and not allow outside income at all.  And they can take it or leave it.

  10. The rest of them probably have close family who are landlords.

  11. More than 2/3rds aren’t isn’t as good a headline I guess?

  12. How many of the rest are friends or family with landlords?
