> Female students at the University of Manchester say they are “fearing for their safety” after **an all-male committee** set up a pro-life society.
Lmao, you really couldn’t make it up, could you? I guess it really is easier to support this shite when it has nothing to do with your own body.
A university should be a space where any ideas can be discussed and promoted – if they are good ideas then they will thrive and develop, if they are bad ideas then they will be shot down and replaced by better ones.
As long as they are not actively harassing individuals and just exercising their right to discuss and promote the pro-life stance, then there shouldn’t be an issue.
If we live in a society where the other side of the argument doesn’t have the right to present their argument or even gather to discuss their ideas, then that’s a problem.
> “Societies are supposed to be opportunities for students to explore their interests outside of and meet like-minded people. These men turned around and said ‘what is it I like to do in my spare time?’ and thought ‘my interest is sitting and discussing something that’s never going to happen to me, that does not pertain to my bodily autonomy and something that I will never have to make a decision about’.”
Politicians sit around and discuss ideas and draft up policy that won’t apply to them all the time – it doesn’t mean they are not allowed to merely discuss these topics.
Fearing for your safety seems the new in vogue way of shutting down speech you don’t like
Absolutely disgraceful these people shouldn’t be given space.
I wonder if this society is getting any funding from any of those unhinged American evangelical activist organisations.
Why am I not surprised that this society is run by only male students.
I mean theyre tossers but we have fucking Marxist societies at universities that openly pledge allegiance to the CCP and Cuba, who deny Holdomor and other Communist attrocities and who actively try to push this ideology onto the SU and university.
We’ve had islamic societies trying to have people banned from speaking for the mere critique of their religion.
We have vegans running amok banning animal products at the SU for everyone as theyre able to get by on 7% turn outs for huge changes for some fucking reason.
We have the Chinese societes activitely spying on students and reporting them to the CCP for detainment back home. They also are calling taiwanese students cockroaches and in some case assaulting them.

I hate these wankers too but the SU already puts up with thousands of moronic societes. Student politics is a garbage truck and always has been. Theyre not making you unsafe anymore than the rest of them. And the societes actually getting people killed are not just protected but promoted by the SU.
Jewish students are the ones to ask about feeling unsafe in the SU these days.
Why is it that, wherever you go, there’s always someone else who wants to decide what you should and shouldn’t be able to do with your body?
>Fear for their safety
Come on now. Just call them a bunch of arseholes and go about your day.
I’m convinced that things like this are all. in some way, funded by Russia
Fair enough in one sense, they’ve every right to their opinions, even if most of us think they’re extremely wrong.
But, given the historic correlation between anti abortion views and intimidation of vulnerable women, this new “society” needs to be carefully monitored and scrutinised.
Good thing about the UK as opposed to USA is our huge amount of irreligious beliefs
Weird American things won’t gain as much traction here because of that, as their ultimate authority is the Bible which most British people, rightly, believe is a ridiculous book.
But I don’t think we should start censoring people, but are also free to call them idiots and investigate who exactly they are and who funds
I mean, what sort of weird young man joins an anti abortion club at university? Freaks, that’s who
Stupid arses, we don’t have a right to abortion here, we have medical abortions, you have to have two dr’s sign saying you can have one… Why don’t they piss off and get a life.
What’s with all this American bs becoming more prevalent?
pro life deserves no respect, it’s a tool used to manipulate American politics.
it’s a common sense issue nothing more
As a bloke, I genuinely don’t get it. If it’s in a woman’s body let them choose. I think it’s fair to maybe have a conversation before you start sleeping together about what you’re doing if things happen accidentally, if your views don’t line up then walk away. Pretty simple
Do you want free speech, or do you want only the “right” groups to have speech.
You can only have one – and you don’t get to control who defines what the “right” groups are.
Imagine meeting a guy on a night out and he tells you he’s the treasurer for the anti abortion society hahahaha
Wonder how many of the committee have adopted unwanted children or have given money and support like childcare. Often the ones who are “pro life” (which by the way doesn’t ever seem to include the life of the pregnant girl) are also the ones who are anti providing any sort of support…
Why are they “fearing for their safety“? Abortion isn’t illegal in the UK and whatever theses guys say that won’t change. Just ignore them and get on with your life.
The societies membership is made up entirely of white males – AKA Incel virgins.
I shudder to think how much of a deluded cunt one has to be to join such a society let alone fucking found it. I hope their university experience is as aggressively unhappy as I’m imaging it will be.
This looks to me like free speech laws working as they should. Has this new society actually done or said anything so far that suggests they would be a threat to women’s safety on campus? From the article, it just seems like some female students feel like it’s something that *might potentially* happen in the future. Banning a group purely on that basis is laughable in a democratic society, as much as you (and me) might disagree with their point of view.
>A statement from the University of Manchester’s student union said that if the actions of a society amount to hate speech or harassment, it would be challenged in line with the relevant procedures.
There we are. The boundary between free speech and hate speech has been clearly acknowledged and communicated by the union, along with an indication that there will be consequences for crossing said boundary. That should be the end of it.
The students are complaining about misogyny and threats to female bodily autonomy, yet universities up and down the country tolerate, and indeed welcome, societies representing a religion that is interpreted by many adherents to call for the removal of autonomy from women. That is not whataboutery, it’s pointing out a double standard. Why do Islamic societies not make women feel unsafe, but this one does? What about Catholic societies that will also be anti-abortion? You either have to accept all views up to the boundary quoted above, or none. But then you would no longer have free speech.
I can’t see many students agreeing with this new society’s stance, in which case they will struggle to gain members and will most likely fizzle out or fade into ignorable obscurity. That is how ideas should be evaluated, not by diktat based on the feelings of a loud few.
This Americansation of our country is going to bite us in the arse!
The takeaway for me from this is that an anti-abortion society has become news. For those that understand the reference: I think this story is comparable to news stories about the ‘coldest day for 25 years’ it implies it’s been hotter of late than it used to be.
Fucking weird thing to have a society based around either way. Don’t trust anyone that got into political societies at uni. Bunch of twats the lot of them – and worryingly the ones that aspire to run our country
This shite should be stamped out immediately, it’s growing like a cancer.
Forced birth is slavery of the womb, and advocacy for slavery should not be permitted.
There are lots of societies I didn’t agree with (former UoM student) but I didn’t make drama about it
Good to hear of these positive developments at UoM. Here’s to wishing them success!
Yeah the same people who advocate for the free market of ideas also advocate for the free market of zero regulation and no workers’ rights.
Whilst of course also supporting privatisation of public services; creating publicly funded, privately profiting monopolies.
These guys would riot if you had a “men should have less rights” society. But everyone else’s are up for debate.
it would be great if a membership list was to go public
This is my old alma mater – and while it’s massively disappointing it’s also 100% not surprising. During my time in the Manchester Rag (which existed basically to raise money for charity) I ran into more than one total nutter who seemed to think that it was a stepping stone from there to being Prime Minister.
Imagine being a bloke and caring about what women do with their bodies THIS MUCH. absolutely rank this.
