[Here’s the full advice from Lindsay Hoyle’s top adviser – Tom Goldsmith says he’s laying out his thoughts in line with the new process for registering his concern over a “substantial breach of the Standing Orders or a departure from long-estbalished conventions”.](https://twitter.com/breeallegretti/status/1760302702225985662?t=k_w3XTV6AJpJaf1QivgfjA&s=19)
> Tom Goldsmith, clerk of the House, says Speaker’s decision “represents a departure from the long-established convention for dealing with such amendments on Opposition days, governed by Standing Order No. 31”.
> I’ve been sent a copy that says there are 2 examples in last 25 years where an opposition amendment has been moved on another opposition party’s motion – “however, in those few circumstances, no government amendment had been tabled”
So here the Speaker of the House has blatantly broken hundreds of years of convention to protect Starmer from a rebellion and allow the watered-down motion, that enshrines Israel’s right to safety and to self-defence but not Palestine’s, to be voted on.
[i wonder what swayed Hoyle to make this decision… ](https://twitter.com/thatbloodyMikey/status/1760303456072405075?t=ZiZ6rIMyCsW8sEKlB1El8w)
Edit: [Senior Labour figures tell me @CommonsSpeaker was left in no doubt that Labour would bring him down after the general election unless he called Labour’s Gaza amendment](https://twitter.com/nicholaswatt/status/1760315363542122769?t=rABfJgVqL9B2uPMup4N7Kg&s=19)
> The message was: you will need our votes to be re-elected as speaker after election with strong indications this would not be forthcoming if he failed to call the Labour amendment
The House of Commons is an utter farce. You can’t deny that the way debates etc are held in the devolved administrations are a million times better. This shower of shit is embarrassing. Hoyle is such a crap speaker. He seems to want to stick to protocol when it suits him (I.e. he gets a bee in his bonnet when the government announce policy outside the house) but then goes against it to protect starmer and do shite like this.
Sooner we’re not a part of that shower of cretins the better. No wonder the likes of Mhairi black etc are not interested in being down there. If I were an mp I’d find it very difficult to control my mouth in the House of Commons.
It needs modernising.
Mr speaker is just back from an all expenses paid trip to Israel.
English here, so no fan of the SNP, but Hoyle gave the labour party the authority to take over the debate, this should have been a SNP showcase but instead Lammy is actually speaking now instead of a SNP member, this is absolutely disgusting and against the House conventions, ie the House rules!
The SNP are absolutely seething that their afternoon of playing politics with civilian deaths hasn’t been allowed to transpire.
Devastated that they can’t waste parliamentary time on pointless, wasteful grandstanding.
Fucking farce.
Labour MP Hoyle’s decision to select both the Labour and the government amendments basically means that SNP MPs don’t get the chance to vote on their own motion on their own opposition day.
There is no point in the SNP remaining in Westminster, particularly when the Speaker overrules his own rules. Fucking pathetic.
Labour playing party politics over a universally demanded ceasefire really sees them hit rock bottom. How the ‘proud but’ Labour supporters on here can continue to back them confounds reality.
Looks like Labour threatened Hoyle with removal after the election if he didn’t break his independent role as speaker to bail them out.
Spicy.
I love seeing the hopeless SNP MPs humiliated once again!
You couldn’t paint a red neck on the Labour supporters on this sub.
A clear example of the dismissal of a people’s representation, Scotland, if that representation doesn’t bow to the status quo.
A representation playing by the rules only to see the rules changed, tells us our representation is mute and ignored for convenience of self preservation for a status quo who clearly now will turn its back on our voice if it doesn’t fit their script.
An SNP proposal that is straightforward is handed to labour for support. That proposal is accepted reluctantly by Scot Labour who carry the vote on a matter of conscience, but is rejected by Machiavellian self preservation by London Labour who in doing so are rejecting both the SNP and Slab voice and the voice of the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish peoples voice.
No wonder Dugdale dropped a huge hint that her vote for the SNP on a matter of principal was in actual fact a warning to London Labour, Sarwar, Baillie, and Murray that she was speaking on behalf of a Slab membership and a growing list of Slab MSPs who see that the treatment of Scots who won’t bow the head and be silenced and toe the London line no matter what they inflict on our ” impudent ” voice, is not on.
This is, and always was with Labour, that any Labour representation we send to Westminster on our behalf will not act on our behalf but communicate orders back to us that we will never get what we want or need but will be served a gruel of their making, like it or fucking lump it.
The proof of the pudding will be tonights vote and the ” Scottish ” Labour MPs who will, as our representation in London, will split that voice apart with two different versions, one Scottish Labour against UK Labour, on the exact same principled proposal.
Our voice and democracy is stopped at the border and we really need to stop attempting to try making it heard by deaf ears who clearly don’t give a fuck what we say…no matter the colour of rosette we send as our representation.
Lynsday Hoyle is a joke. He just enjoys his pantomime role and nobody has any respect for him.
Lindsay Hoyle is one of the worst Speakers ever
Quite simply, if the SNP would have removed the political grandstanding portion then there would have been a vote in favour of a ceasefire. I’m more than disappointed by all sides in this whole shit show though, usual shite of no one giving any leeway,
Hoyle is absolutely worthless as a speaker and as a person
Funny that there aren’t any posts about this in ‘the other place’
Please could someone explain a little more for me?
Which of the two amendments would it have been customary for Hoyle to select?
Why does selecting both stop the SNP being able to vote on their motion?
Also, what did Hoyle actually say here? I couldn’t make out a single word in that mince of sounds he made.
Two party state
This is what happens when you have no constitution and everything relies on precedent. There’s no consequences for breaking the rules, so all it takes is one person for everything to go to shit.
Absolute joke of a parliament.
Calling for a ceasefire in a war (no matter the odds on each side), isn’t a ceasefire. SNP are terrorist sympathizers- simple as.
