Thoughts?

Opposing by saying ‘it would give Van Peteghem’ an unfair advantage with elections right around the corner doesn’t seem like a smart move to me. Surely those opposing parties realize that, while Peter isn’t getting his advantage, they now get a disadvantage by publicly showing they don’t want to do us this favor?

  1. This concerns the new one, correct? The one from September should remain at 2,80% right?

  2. Now I’m certain to vote for Alexia and not Van Peteghem. Just like when they boycotted his fiscal reform.

  3. >they now get a disadvantage by publicly showing they don’t want to do us this favor?

That’s the whole fucking problem now, isn’t it? We vote on people who promote Sinterklaaspolitiek, and against people who want to adhere to a strict budget. Resulting in the budget spiraling further out of control every election cycle with no political reasons to do anything about it since actually doing something about it would hurt politically in the long run.

We’ve had a good bond already, and a lot more money went into it than the government was expecting, so why would they even release an extra bond with favourable terms except for Sinterklaaspolitiek? Especially since the profits go to those who literally have money they don’t need for at least a year anyway.

  4. Fairly expected. Still a pretty good rate on the one year bond, but the previous one already more than covered Belgium’s monetary needs. Nobody should expect that this was going to become the norm.

  5. Good decision. We have an enormous deficit in Belgium and yet some politicians always want to distribute (our) money to promote their image.

By the way this is not an issue just with Peter Van Petegem. All of the ministers from all the parties are like that. And the reason why they are like that is because sadly it works…

  6. >they now get a disadvantage by publicly showing they don’t want to do us this favor?

Fuuuuuuuck this sort of retarded logic.

Politicians **do not** do us a favor by inventing ten billion different loopholes, tax breaks, and whatever else they come up with. All this does is drain government resources and require income taxes to remain as high as they are.

You know what would do us a favor? Simplify the entire shit show that is fiscality in this country, get rid of the billions of different exceptions, tax breaks etc. and use the freed up money to reduce income taxes.

But noooooooo. We have people like OP who think politicians arent doing him a favor by not inventing yet another special exception. Fuck this type of logic pisses me off.

  7. What happened to the whole “we’re providing counterweight to the banks”? Maybe just legislate banks into being more competitive??

  8. The whole Staatsbon saga was just political flexing of the CD&V, at the detriment of the banking system’s stability.

If there is an advice from the financial committee that says it makes no sense to emit bonds with fiscal advantage, I’d hope politicians follow-through.
