If in summer, you go to (Old) Zeeland in The Netherlands chances are locals will talk German to you. The Occupation begins a new every May.

We have relevant neigbours, like france or austria. You have the north sea, and the north sea doesnt have a language. Sit down.
I see alot of people are shitting on danish language. Only us Nordics can insult each others.
Depends what German though. Most North Sea people (Dutch, Frisians, Germans and Danes) share a similar dialect in our own languages and it’s usually not too much of a hassle to figure out what the other’s saying in their own language.
Quick rule of thumb: if a German lives near an Edeka that’s open on sunday then they can understand you.
Oh I see you’re familiar with living near the German border, My go to is: “Nee taffes mof, dit is Nederland, als je wil dat ik Duits praat hadden jullie 80 jaar geleden harder moeten vechten, ik ga ook niet naar Nordhorn om te vragen of mensen Nederlands kunnen”
