‘20 Days in Mariupol’ can win an Oscar. Will it make the world care about Russian war crimes in Ukraine?

  1. I finally brought myself to watch it the other night. As a dad it fucked me up.

I wish we could force those protesting polish farmers to watch it and then listen to their “nuanced” views on grain transit

  2. Nominating it for an Oscar gives it “next level” attention. In order to compare nominees, people will have to watch it.

  3. For reasons of social conformity, yes, it will impact holdouts that go whichever way the winds of popular opinion blow. But students newly calibrating their moral compasses should be impacted more meaningfully.

  4. I personally haven’t watched it yet, but let’s be honest, it won’t persuade those that didn’t care before. At max we could expect a temporary small increase in support.

  5. If this (an Oscar award) causes a widespread theatrical release for the movie in North America I absolutely believe it can shape hearts and minds in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty. I would encourage people to contact their local theater chains and request that they screen the movie.

  6. Some people, yeah. “The world” … Unlikely. It’s great that more people will see the heartbreaking truth. But it won’t be enough to make a dent, unfortunately. I truly wish it would at least make someone change their mind or stop them from being neutral. Maybe maybe a small donation. That would be already amazing.
