  1. The multitude of small arms is impressive. Must have been crazy maintaining the multiple calibers supplied

  2. For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway is one of the best war novels I’ve ever read (and by read I mean the phenomenal audiobook by Campbell Scott). He was a journo embedded with the international brigade and wrote this book shortly after the Republican defeat. It follows an American partisan operating with local Spanish peasant rebels fighting the fascists. Hemingway explores the personal brutality of a civil war along with an honest look at the oft-romanticized guerrilla fighting.

One really unique perspective was his villification of Andre Marty, chief political commissar of the Brigades. His stupidity, paranoia, and needless cruelty is emblematic of the Communist purge mentality and something rarely portrayed in fiction.
