I went to the theatre and saw mean girls 2024, it was a steaming pile of garbage.. One of the worst films I have ever seen.. the 70 year old lady behind me was upset and complaining to her friend that she couldn’t put her feet up on my seat. I paid $44 for popcorn and drinks and the tickets cost me $65. I was over $100 to be attacked by a 70 year old while eating and watching trash.
hmmm.. no wonder no one is going to the movies. The whole industry can’t just be an oppenheimer every few years.
Maybe Hollywood should start creating more… you know, films that are entertaining?
Probably good that AI came along
People still watch films. They just do it at home with streaming.
I mean, she’s not wrong. People’s primary form of entertainment has clearly become tied to their phones. That said, good films are still making money and drive popular culture. It’s not a coincidence that “Murder on the Dance Floor” became a trending song on TikTok not long after “Saltburn” premiered. Just because there’s more options for people to watch doesn’t mean films don’t still have massive cultural impact
It’s very weird what’s happening right now, but humans have always told stories and placed value on storytelling, so I think new methods of production and distribution will emerge/are emerging.
If you read the entire article, Natalie Portman gives a pretty nuanced take and actually praises the democratization of art + how there are less gatekeepers to entertainment creation nowadays with YouTube/social media. It’s not just her complaining about the state of film.
