Garrett Hargan: The Irish government in one single project (£38.5m) is set to commit more than both the NI Economy Department and Ulster University have combined over ten years. UU is on course to get £84m from Derry’s City Deal funds – 12 TIMES MORE than it has spent here in a DECADE.

Multiple interesting threads over the last day or so from Garrett Hargan on expenditure in the Northwest (or lack thereof).

Garrett is correct here, as he usually is. The whole situation is nothing short of a scandal.
The Derry campus should be wrested from UU IMO (who have never had any interest in developing it) and it should then be expanded into it’s own NW region University.
DUP run economy department for all of the time he mentions. Very Belfast centric thinking in the leadership positions for the UU, backed by decision making from economy department. Unsurprising but scandalous figures. Big challenge for SF and Conor Murphy to move the dial on this.
Magee needs to be forcibly removed from UU. Could maybe merge it with ATU or set up a standalone university?
John Hume University anyone?
I’m on Magee campus and spend very little time in Belfast. My jaw hit their marbled floors the first time I was on their campus earlier this year.
It’s a fucking joke but it is great to see anyone putting funding into derry. This town needs it desperately to pull it out of the dark ages.
Ironically, most of the UU courses that are at magee (law, nursing, CS, Irish etc.) are some of the highest ranking at Ulster.
