I know they’ve tried incentives and there are fire regulations, but it’s a shame to see all our towns with huge buildings and nothing only spiders for inhabitants.
If I was in government I’d deliver 100,000 homes a year, all for €300,000 each….in the centre of Dublin!
This all just so much political posturing if the plan doesn’t include a complete root and branch reform of ABP processes to stop a single person blocking 100s of apartments or homes with spurious NIMBY reasoning.
Until that’s done we are just living in a fantasy land designed to maintain a grey voting base who’ve happily pulled up the ladder on two full generations at this point.
She doesn’t mention a *single* policy to increase capacity (indeed she outright says that we should expect 50k homes per year under a FF or FG government too), only that the Social Democrats would take more of your tax money to bid against you in order for a larger percentage of that capacity to be given away as social housing.
Anyone promising that who doesn’t have it as a target for the end of their term (~5 years) is a lying cunt.
50,000??? Why not 60,000 or 160,000??? Think bigger holly!
Who’s going to build them?
There’s a severe shortage of trades people at every level, so good luck with that plan Holly.
This was not a good showing.
comments like that case a serious loss of credibility. I’ll assume good intentions and naivety
Predictably, Cairns can’t offer any evidence whatsoever that the delivery of such housing targets can possibly be realised. So why make the claim? Voters aren’t that dumb and this just makes the Soc Dems appear hopelessly naive at best and downright insincere and opportunistic at worst.
The slow down in commercial construction might free up some labour, but where does the capital come from? Who will fund the building of these new homes? Where will they be built?
Cork City has about 50,000 households living in it. (Average size of a household in Ireland is about 2.6 people. Cork is about 126,000 people, versus 130,000 if you multiply 50,000 x 2.6.)
What she is saying is that we’re randomly going to build a new Cork City every year without any explanation as to where the labour will come from other than a vague reference to commercial slowing down. No mention of schools, roads, services, hospitals, extra policing, extra everything.
Vote me in. Free cake for everyone !!!
So many comments here from seemingly well intentioned people, yet people that don’t seem to understand or are attempting to ignore that construction federation ireland have already said we have the capacity to reach this number already.
I like the recent rhetoric from the SocDems generally but I hate comments like this because they are rarely backed with sensible recommendations that they would implement. I’d much prefer the opposition parties to say they will try their best to remove roadblocks for developments but would work on a better system overall for more sustainable developments. Saying 50k a year sure sounds good but 50k garbage homes in places that don’t have infrastructure to support them also is bad.
I wonder if these houses are in the room with her right now
Political kite flying
how about actually enforcing laws on airbnbs please. that would do a lot for supply in the short term.
We could solve the housing crisis by reclassifying outside as one big house.
Yea and I’d shit gold if I could.
What’s the plan when everything is blocked by interests outside your control, what is the plan
Would they be delivered by Uber eats?
Who is going to build them? We need more trades people to come home. But there’s nowhere for them to live. Wait, let’s build houses. Back to square 1.
I don’t have an answer either.
I’d like to give her my Number 1. If you take my meaning
Holly says we need more whoams, yah.
Is she going to help build them? Isn’t that the problem, there isn’t enough builders.
If we could drop our obsession with concrete it would be a big help
These comments are weird. 50,000 isn’t a ridiculous unachievable target, labour were promising 100,000 ffs. Do people just want to accept the current housing crisis as is?
1. ENFORCE LAWS ON AIRBNB
2.THE MORE HOUSE’S YOU OWN THE MORE TAX YOU PAY. PERIOD
3.CITIZENS GET HOUSING BEFORE ANYONE ELSE.
there that’s my party solution.
Hasnt a clue.
I don’t believe a world that comes out of any of their mouths anymore. They might mean well, but in reality, what does a dairy farmer know about construction?
