What is the purpose of this metal bar?

  1. Pretty sure it’s a weird drink holder, you can either use it flat or clamp in a bottle against the back of the seat.

  2. You can practice your finger-football skills if you put it upright

  3. To prevent your marble collection from rolling off the table

  4. As far as I know, it’s a remnant from when the train’s windows could actually open. You could use the little clamp to hold down any papers/books/newspaper you might be reading so the pages aren’t flipped by the wind coming in from the windows. Since all trains have AC now and the windows are fixed in place, you only see this bar on older trains.

  5. I usually use it to keep my coffee on the table

  6. When the conducteur comes you place your tip there. It is normal to tip 50 euro to the conducteur

  7. Cupholder; that or otherwise some torture device to forget your in an overcrowded delayed train…

  8. To hold your papers in case the train goes off the rails.

  9. Mousetrap.

You have to bring your own cheese though. After all, it’s a Dutch company, being cheap is baked in.

  10. You can set down a drinking cup there and it should stay put.

  11. If you pull on it really hard repeatedly, the person sitting in the seat in front of you will stand up and give you a ‘klap op je muil’ which is a really cool Dutch tradition. Try it sometime!

  12. It’s so you can more easily take your seat with you when you disembark the train.

  13. You can use it to put some ketchup for your fries

  14. This allows you to chatter annoyingly so that people are bothered by you

  15. For your mom to dramatically crap while the train is moving

  16. To smash your balls when you leave your bag on the empty seat

  17. Om papier onder vast te klemmen. De tijd van de gratis OV-kranten is wel echt voorbij nu, dus hoe nuttig zijn ze nog?

  18. To listen to bands like Slayer, Slipknot and Metallica

  19. It’s where I put my drink so it doesn’t go flying off

Not sure what the official use is though
