I’m heading to Norway in mid March for three weeks. We will be arriving in Oslo, doing the Norway in a Nutshell route to Bergen (with an overnight in Flam) and then going on a Hurtigruten cruise from Bergen to Tromso. We will spend a couple of days in Tromso and Narvik and then head to Sweden by train.

We are coming from Australia and I plan on bringing my Helly Hansen LIFA base layer pants ([https://hellyhansen.com.au/collections/womens-baselayers/products/w-hh-lifa-pant](https://hellyhansen.com.au/collections/womens-baselayers/products/w-hh-lifa-pant)) to wear under travel pants or jeans. We have waterproof over trousers if needed. We aren’t planning on doing any snow activities (no skiing, snow mobiles or husky sled rides planned), but just expect to be walking around sightseeing, visiting museums etc.

Do we need merino base layer tights?

We both have merino layers for our tops, down jackets and good rain coats. We both have warm, waterproof boots. Where we live in Australia it’s common to be around 10-12 degrees Celsius during the day in winter and gets down to minus 5 overnight. At home, we would only wear long johns if we planned to be outside in the snow.
