At least people are buying them now which is good
It is always a question of who is subsidized with subsidies : the premium goes to the rich middle class people who buy an ev for less than 40,000 euros but actually mainly to the company that can sell more thanks to the subsidy in Flanders. The only ev assembled here is from the now Chinese brand Volvo and the only eligible electric Volvo is the EX30 with a base price of 39k euro. All other “affordable” European electric cars are either of French, Italian, or Rumanian make.
And besides that, subsidizing cars in an already too crowded country is not really a good idea. It adds to the mistakes of the minister who leaves public transportation empty handed. I remember a green politician who had her picture taken in a then skandinavian Volvo and was already met with tons of criticism. When will we have a government leading the way in a De Lijn bus?
If only that money had gone to promote reducing consumption rather than changing consumption patterns…
It’s the same business model as the American health care industry. Jack up the prices because they’re not paying for it themselves. Absolutely silly…
Funny how this gets promoted as “goed bestuur”, but we *absolutely need* to save money on anything that goes to the sick, the poor and the elderly.
