Climate crisis is ‘greatest long term health threat’, says ONS

  1. No shit.

More worrying than heatwaves will be the mass migration and geopolitical tensions that arise from the fight for resources and space as populated lands become uninhabitable.

  2. It’s awful how little we have done to prepare for this. We should of been doing that ten years ago.

  3. One of the easiest things you can do as an individual is eat more plant based food and less animal produce, most importantly you spare animal suffering, but you also benefit the environment

    * Large portion of Amazon deforestation goes towards soy, around 70% of which is used to feed cattle

    * Less land needed for farm animals, can be rewelded, repurposed to grow vegetables where possible

    * Animal produce uses a huge amount of water compared to plants, a plant based burger is a fraction of water used compared to beef

    * Local farming is only slightly better for emissions than factory farms, overseas freight is not nearly as bad for the environment as people think, it’s about what you eat (https://ourworldindata.org/food-choice-vs-eating-local)

    * We can use gases for other things instead of gassings pigs to death (RSPCA approved slaughter method btw) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVR7NjnMkIc

  4. Too bad we’re not good at thinking in the long-term for the most part, which is not helped by companies and governments trying to make it out as if we still have decades to act. Climate change is here now but many don’t recognise that because changes have been subtle or heatwaves are being reported simply as beach weather. Corporate greenwashing is making it seem as though action is being taken, same with green capitalism (electric cars and such). We need to consume less of everything possible and stop expanding further into nature if we want to stand a chance, however most people refuse to give up things now, even though it means helping them out in the long term.
