What’s the point of having the 24 week limit if it isn’t going to be enforced?
So does the doctor have the right to refuse to carry out an abortion?
I fully understand the reason why making it a criminal act isn’t really in the benefit of anyone, but if someone gets “cold feet” and decides to terminate the pregnancy when 35-40 weeks in, can the doctor refuse?
Edit: who downvoted my question? Seriously?
Edit 2: nevermind.
Wow, can’t help thinking that the pendulum is swinging too far the other way here.
I have no problem with abortion because there are so many situations where it is 100% called for BUT! I will say, if they’re going to allow this to happen I want assisted suicide to be reconsidered. If it’s truly our life to live we should be allowed to choose legally when we can’t handle it anymore.
Given the recent change in the guidance from the The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) this seems more than sensible.
Why?? I fully support abortion rights but there absolutely need to be limits. The 24 week limit we have is sensible, and it absolutely should be criminal to get an abortion after that (unless there are the special circumstances which are already granted exemptions under the law).
Presumably this is all because of the woman who got an (admittedly harsh) prison sentence for a late abortion, but she deserved to be prosecuted and convicted for what is and should remain a crime, it’s just that the sentence she recieved was arguably a bit too severe.
Aborting a substantially-developed foetus, ie after 24 weeks, for non-life threatening/health reasons is essentially the murder of a viable child. I’m all for allowing women to have those 24 weeks to make a decision about their bodies when the foetus is less developed. Even though I do think there is a strong argument to actually reduce the time frame, the 24 week limit is a trade-off to ensure women still keep their free will. But this proposal reeks of the degenerate direction our society and parliament has been heading. There are much better ways to prevent the police from bothering women who have had to undergo the trauma of an unintended late abortion, than to outright decriminalise the murder of would-be children.
I’m against abortion in every single circumstance and I think it should always be illegal. But I also think this is sensible
It’s already defacto decriminalised, this is just the law being honest about reality
So if this happens, could a woman a week before she was due to give birth, terminate her pregnancy / kill her unborn child and there would be no consequences?
