Haha remember Humza saying during his leadership pitch that he was going to empower local authorities? Now it’s you will freeze your council tax, cut budgets as a result, and if you refuse we’ll blackmail you by withholding Barnett consequentials
And here we have it.
SNP makes promises it cant keep, so threatened local councils, who are struggling because the SNP has already passed on cuts to them at a much higher level than it should have, and kept money centrally.
Actually THREATENING councils because Youseless made promises he cant keep.
This is how the SNP would treat scotland if we went indy. Centralising, and disadvantaging the regions because they are a centralising, authoritarian party.
WM provides money to be passed onto local councils. SNP keep as much as that for themselves, then when local councils have to put up council tax because of the SNP moneygrab, the SNP threaten them with more cuts…..
It a good look. Distribution of funds should be based on a needs basis.
Doesn’t seem like the smartest message here and I’m not sure if it’s just another shitty headline or not.
But, if a council increases council tax and takes money off their constituents then they’ve raised the cash (or more) that they were going to get given have they not?
So why would they get more?
Let their constituents decide what they this was the best thing to do at the next local election.
Wakey wakey people, this is exactly the same arrangement since the first freeze in 2007.
These freezes are voluntary as the Government can’t force the Local Authorities to change their funding model. If you don’t believe this, see what Argyll and Bute have done this year.
The Government “funds” the freeze if the council does it.
So all this PEARL CLUTCHING about bribery etc is pathetic. Try growing a brain and see beyond the fake news propaganda by Unionist Shiterags
Semantics
The SNP are a party built on the idea of achieving independence from a larger state, yet ironically have always been pro centralisation and hate the idea of local decision making.
That is seriously uncool
Most councils are on the verge of bankruptcy….likely instead they will cut staff & services
If there’s one thing which people on all parts of the Scottish political spectrum should be able to agree on is that council run services are on the decline. I don’t know the situation in Argyll and Bute, but I’d be surprised if they’re faring any better than other councils especially given the large and rural geographical area it covers. Despite them not being as flashy as parliamentary politics in many ways it’s decisions by councils and the quality/reliability of the services they provide which we notice most on a day-by-day basis.
The idea that raising council tax is just “tories wanting to take money from people” is astonishingly out of touch with the reality of council budgets and the services they are both required to provide, and people want them to provide. I’m sure most people would be less impressed with their council tax being frozen if the government advertised alongside it that services would be (further) cut to make up the budget shortfall.
So punish the voters for the crime of needing public services.
A might be getting this wrong but does everyone in here actually want to pay more council tax
I mean yea the extra money is to cover the council tax freeze? If they are going to go and increase the council tax rate why should they get the extra funding while other councils are
Argyle and Bute just bumped their Council rates by 10%, why should they get both funding to cover CT tax freezes and then get the extra income of that Council tax rise?
SNP: Starmer’s bullying must be investigated.
Also SNP: STFU and do as we say, or we’ll cut your funding even more.
Remind me again how the SNP represent the people of Scotland by denying them public services?
The council tax freeze was a poor shortsighted policy in the first place. The SNP committed to reforming council tax and as soon as they were in power they realised it was too big for them to do, so once again took the easy decision and not the right decision. It’s now coming back to bite them.

Vile creatures the lot of the SNP.
