  1. 23rd February 1945. Just in time to make, eh … a massive contribution to the war effort, I assume.

  2. Context

Turkey’s strategy during ww2 wasn’t picking the strong side. It was neutrality. The president İnönü was one of the biggest veterans of ww1 and war of independence. He knew what a war meant and tried hard to keep Turkey out of that hell. If Turkey attend the war, most likely would become soviet influenced country like eastern europeans.

He has a famous phrase: “I left you without bread, but I didn’t leave you without father”

  3. And at 5th of may, Germany surrendered. No need to thanks.

  4. Turkey Declares War (and you won’t believe on who!!)

  5. Also Peru and Uruguay did the same weeks before to get a seat in the UN. As the Soviet Union blocked Ireland from getting a seat years after the war it was probably a good idea.

  6. A purely symbolic and opportunistic declaration. People here are debating whether Turkish neutrality was pro-Allied or pro-Axis but it doesn’t matter, just as “what if” German or Soviet invasion plans don’t matter. The fact is Turkey took actions that benefited both sides during the war, such as trading valuable chromium supplies to Nazi Germany until late 1944 to providing intelligence to the Allies.

It would also help if certain elements in Turkish politics would accept results of the war, such as Greece being awarded the Dodecanese Islands for choosing to resist Italy and Germany in 1940-41, rather than sign agreements and join the Axis.

  7. And Germany surrendered almost immediately after

  8. You’re welcome, they were (/s)o afraid of u(/s) that they (/s)urrendered within month(/s).

  9. Virtue signaling is an old trade

Couldn’t be bothered to declare war while Italians were mowing down the Balkans.
