New ‘ban’ on phones in school explained

The government wants to stop kids using their phones at school but will it actually work they just sent head teachers in England some ideas like making kids give their phones to teachers every morning or even banning all phones from the school completely and it’s reminded schools that they can

Search pups if they think they have a banned item on them like a phone one in three year 10 and year 11s say pupils use their phones in most or all of their lessons but the union that represents senior teachers says it’s a nonpr and the government’s latest crack down won’t

Actually make a difference because most schools already forbid phones so is it possible to actually stop kids using their phones at school or have bands already gone too far let me know in the comments

The government has issued new guidelines to headteachers in England on how to stop pupils using phones in schools, but the school union says most schools already forbid phones.

  1. School that my kids went to made them hand them in at the start of the day…went into phone lockers. At the end of the day they got them back. If a kid was found with a phone not handed in, It was kept at the school for 10 days. Every kid handed them in. Parents signed up to the policy.

  2. The school I went to had signs saying "Hand in your phone in the morning. You will get your phone back at the end of the day… If you don't, you will be down graded and your phone will be confiscated for 1 week.

  3. From my personal experience as teacher at secondary school & as a lecturer at a semi-military college where phones are banned in the former but not really penalised & the latter is totally prohibitted & penalised, I find it much better in the latter & here's why. When I was at school, there are bullies who misuse phones & there are students who use them in cheating exams. But in the semi-military institution students are not distracted & less cyberbullying between cadets. But of course, using phone in itself is not a crime if not leads to unwanted results such as distractions or cyberbullying.

  4. This is becoming unethical and extreme to ban phones and search for phones, kids need their phones for learning and most importantly emergency cases

  5. I don't agree with this. Having my phone in Year 7 helped me at breaktime and lunch bc you can record possible evidence of bullying and get into contact with parents and friends immediately. Let's be clear that teachers don't keep students safe outside of the classroom so we need to do that ourselves. Nothing wrong in confiscating phones during lessons, but outside of the classroom? No. Why do they even care if we use our phones outside of class?

  6. It's a good opportunity for illegal "school" phone smuggling business and it teach the kids about smuggling and contraband. LOVE IT

  7. I agree, let the schools continue implementing their own rules. Whenever the state is giving some power, it always misuses that power. The state can never be trusted

  8. How about focusing on the state of schools and the real problems that schools are facing.
As the clip said, the rules are already in place.
    So, it's utterly irrelevant.
Another slight of hands by this desperate Tory government.
    It's already a rule.

  9. As a teacher I've never had a problem with phones in class, in fact I can only remember one instance of having to take a phone from kid.

The vast majority of kids use their phones responsibly, and there are times when they are extremely useful in class, for example if a child wants to check a spelling, or if the lesson requires research to be done.

Furthermore, for those whose first language is not English they are essential given the financial strains on schools and the employment of teaching assistants.

  10. To be fair banning the completely isnt right, i got my first mobile phone when i started year 7, im now 33. It meant i had a phone incase i needed help. Ok so dont let them use it in class, but dont try this ban

  11. Signal jammers in schools so you dont have to take the phones, but they will be useless with no service. Then you check to see what devices are connected to school wifi, boom, you can see your troublemakers 😂 track and take any phone connected to school wifi during lesson times.

  12. Ahh yes,
156+ schools are in danger of collapsing, with no signs that the government cares, so lets ban phones in school instead, to distract people.

  13. It's stupid to ban phones. They are a part of life now and quite often if i don't understand something i use my phone to google it, if i want to take notes i use my phone, if i need evidence of something i use my phone. It's an important tool that needs to be taught about… It's like taking pens away from students because they can be used to write swear words and prod each other with. It's a miraculous technology that means i can shoot edit and release a video all on one device. It's the most important invention of humanity along with the internet and currently us idiots use this advanced technology to distract ourselves and scroll endlessly through shorts (guilty as charged). We should be teaching children about the practical and academic application of phones.

I remember when maths teachers told us we couldn't always have a calculator in our pockets…. Lol try having an entire text, video and audio library, global communications, video and still camera, editing suite, hand held computer, musical instrument, games console, virtual wallet and a calculator in your pocket in one device. And I can still fit my hands in my pockets (which is something I was also told off for as a child lol).

So yeah I think schools need to catch up they were already severely outdated 20 years ago and if we want kids to take school seriously we should be realistic about the world.

  14. Yes it's possible to ban phones in schools. I've worked in work places where they are banned on the grounds of health and safety, so if you can ban them in one place, you can ban them in another.

  15. As a child who was the only one who had a phone in school, back in 1995 at 15 years old, I can fully support the idea of a complete and outright ban. There was only one other person I could call or text, a friend in college. It destroyed my concentration level and all I had was text and snake.

  16. It's all about educating kids, not to use them once somehing is being explained in a class. Teaching them when is appropriate or not to use them is much better solution rather than policing them. Banning them completely doesn't make any sense in the 21st century.
