Welcome to the Scottish Borders.

Sure, it’s a local council election with local issues, but it’s a tory council – they can’t pretend they’re in opposition.

  1. It’s pretty much tory vs SNP in many rural areas including the borders.

With SNP fortunes going down the pan worse than the tories it means the tories will do better.

The SNP historically have a conservative base in Scotland.

Eventually it’ll settle down – presumably if a right wing tartan tory like Forbes gets in as leader it’ll help the SNP in rural areas. Or perhaps people will switch to labour or LibDem in those areas and they’ll beat the tories there after a cycle or two.

  2. I’ll never be happy until they are wiped off the political map.

  3. Lucky we don’t rely on Scottish Labour to save us from the Tories.

  4. Clean sweep…

Probably need to remember that STV is terrible for by-elections. Yes; they got the most votes, and gained ground. But, the devil is in the details.

They would have been unlikely to get all three seats if they were all up for election. In the original election, 2 Tories and an SNP were elected. The SNP candidate stood down.

Whilst there was a swing to the tories, it’s unlikely to have been enough to secure all three seats if they were all up for contest. However, only the vacated seat was up for contest, which means the most popular party gets in. Regardless of the party affiliations of existing members.

In one of my wards, we had an utterly bizarre situation years back where Labour eventually got all four seats after two by-elections despite a swing to the SNP.

  5. It just having to listening to no neck Ross crowing about it as if it was a realignment of the planets in terms of a future general election. He is such a tosser

  6. Fun trivia courtesy of Ballot Box Scotland, the winning Conservative candidate here was an independent in 2022, and until this byelection was the last person to have stood as a Lib Dem here (in 2012).

BBS was unsurprisigly on the mark in calling how this one would go: https://ballotbox.scot/preview-jedburgh/

  7. Dunblane and Bridge of Allan elected a Tory a few weeks back too.

  8. No, Tories will likely pick up a few seats due to Labour splitting the vote.

  9. Of course they are done. Nobody wants them in Scotland, and they are a laughing stock of a party.

It’s Time the Scottish government just stop engaging with them at holyrood.
