My girlfriends dog only understands Finnish. What kind of things can I say to it?

  1. If your girlfriend has trained her dog, the most common vocal commands are;

    “Tassu” = Shake

    “Paikka” = Stay

    “Istu” = Sit

    “Maahan” = Lie Down

    The rest “tricks” vary a lot from person to person. When I taught our late dog to play dead, the command I used was “Bang” since it was short enough to be easily trained. Circling eight around my legs was also “Kasi”.

    Dogs will also regocnize certain phrases if they are attached to routines, so saying things like “Kauppaan” = To a Shop, might alert a dog that it will not be allowed to come with, or “Lenkille” = Hike/Jog may get them excited to go wherever you’re going. “Sisälle” = inside, a vital command during winter months.

    But in general, since you’re a stranger whose intonation is probably a lot different from your girlfriends, the dog will respond best to hand signals. Hand signals are used to train dogs first, and vocal commands are added to them later, as dogs understand physical signals better.

    These vary depending on who is training the dog, but usually extending the hand for shake, putting your hand above their head for sit, and tapping the ground for lie down are used.
