Popped in there last summer and a young guy drinking at the bar asked my boyfriend why he was here and not “back home in China or wherever it fucking is.” Not in much of a hurry to go back tbh.
Think the Kray brothers used to hang out here. And occasionally slay people.
Been in there once for a beer, seemed unremarkable
Is OP american or something? Are we meant to be impressed by pubs that are from 1894?
Shithole
Wasn’t it owned by someone of note at some point, aside from the Krays connection.
A footballer I believe.
Ronnie Kray shot & killed a bloke called Cornell in the head in the bind beggar in broad daylight in front of a load of witnesses.
Didn’t Iron Maiden start playing there?
The Blind Beggar has been trading off George Cornell’s murder since 1966. But if you wanted a genuine gangster’s pub then you’d have to visit the [Grave Maurice](https://thekraytwins.fandom.com/wiki/The_Grave_Maurice) a few doors down. A genuinely terrifying establishment right up to the late 1990s, now sadly gone.
About 20 years ago I worked in the Grave Maurice that was a few doors down towards the station. It’s a bookies now but the Beggar was a palace in comparison to it.
I once knocked myself out on the framework of the market stalls in your picture running for a bus – it was late at night and the stalls were closed but the frames were left up. The quickest route was to go directly through the stalls which involved jumping over a low metal bar, I did this and hit my head off the bar above. Woke up to a sore head and a few random passers by looming over me.
Yeah but fuck London
I was in there that night.
I remember reading somewhere that so many people reckon they were there at the time of the shooting that some locals call it the Tardis.
