Swedish opposition, prior to tomorrow’s probable ratification of Sweden’s accession to NATO by Hungary, pressure the government to immediately start talks on the supply of JAS-39 Gripen to Ukraine. A majority in parliament seems to support this move.

4. Gripens have many attractions, but the biggest one from my point of view is that Ukraine will be able to participate in the manufacturing. On the other side of the pond, F-16s have a real killer attraction: thousands can be made available. The limitation will be Ukrainian pilots, not airframes.

5. Just to be clear, the government is already very much in favor of supplying Gripen to Ukraine and I expect that it’s only waiting for the green light from the military. It’s good that the opposition are applying pressure anyway though, it shows the support is strong and we could do even more.

6. The big problem with the F16, is Ukraine has to do some work on their runways… and its really hard to hide that kind of thing from a satellite.

7. This makes sense. They cannot build on the F16 platform of the US doesn’t supply the munitions for it.

8. Scandinavian military support for Ukraine is surprisingly high from what’s usually considered pacifistic countries. What’s even more surprising is that the countries that have received the most support from Europe during times of financial crisis, are the ones to give the least.

9. the problem is twofold…the swedish defense is struggling to grow..i dont know why but its just not growing like its supposed to its rather sad and they have complained about us giving away what little we have since we more or less dismantled the entire defense after the cold war…its in a really bad shape despite politicians saying its going to be strong…its just not happening its weird.

   the other problem is gripen is handmade in a pretty small factory it takes 12-48 months to build a single fighter jet and we just agreed to sell hungary 4 for some dumb reason.

   so with that ukraine would get gripen like 4-5 years from now since the 4 half built hulls now is reserved for hungary who held up our nato application for 2 years.

   in fact it might be the reason hungary bought exactlly 4 gripens…to screw with ukraine getting any help.
