  1. Bertie is a taxi driver now?
What’s worse – losing a few % of the transaction or losing the entire fare because you don’t accept cards?
Also, great way to advertise yourself as a prime mugging target at the end of a busy night.

  2. What does he do with his takings? Stuff the mattress?

  3. “Man makes life unnecessarily difficult for himself in return for some attention” would work as a headline too.

  4. >taxi drivers are losing somewhere in the region of 5% to the card supplier and their bank…. If you are taking fares by day and by night and they are all by card then that adds up. If you are looking at that on a monthly and daily basis you could be losing anything between €5,000 and €10,000 per year. If you are taking a cash job then you are taking the full fare.”

So his turnover is €100k-200k? And he’s unbanked? That’s mental.

  5. I’m struggling to think how I would insure my car with cash? I know some have offices like FBD and Axa but would they handle cash? You’d have very limited options of who to go with even if they did.

Revenue might want a word with him too if they see that.

  6. Fuck this prick, the regulator will strip his license.

  7. Not accepting cards is one thing. Having no account of any kind is another, how is he paying for his insurance?

  8. >It’s about an authority trying to impose their will against people’s wishes.

People want to be able to pay with card, you absolute bellend.

  9. Surely he gets charged anyways for banking that money. May as well read, man without license is annoyed he cannot drive

  10. I would care but I’ve taken taxis before and I was charged 10 quid.

When I got a taxi on the same route back it was suddenly 15 euro.

Didn’t hit any traffic either, clean run to and from destination.

Thats too much of a difference for me to think “oh but I was stuck in traffic for 15 mins”

How else can the price jump between 10 and 15 quid….3 hours apart….anyone got any insight or is just some taxis have fucked with the meter?

  11. Openly admitting to breaking the law is certainly a bold move.

  12. A stupid excuse when all he had to say was he doesn’t want to give a % of his earnings to a bank who already charge far too much for far too little service.

I’m all in favour of keeping cash alive and encouraging others to insist on using it but he’s going to need more than that camoflage hunting jacket to avoid getting robbed.

  13. I wonder how he pays for his rent or mortgage… or electricity bills and all that goes with it

  14. Well you’ve just put the kettle on for the taxman there, don’t think this Willie is too Wyse

  15. Taxi drivers are chancers. All of them. I know plenty. They all love a few extra quid and the taxman is told fuck all. And if you’re drunk/stupid/foreign enough you’ll pay extra too.

As it ever was and always will be.

  16. I say he’s right. Provided he states he only accepts cash in advance he should be able to refuse anything else. Same way companies can refuse cash if they want to. You can walk on to the next one then in the queue.

  17. He’s a lying prick, everyone has a bank account of some sort, miserable fucker just doesn’t want to pay taxes, but I can guarantee you he had his hand out in covid lockdowns looking for help

  18. Complaining about that publicly seems like a great way to get Revenue on your case.

  19. Bold move of him to go on a national paper and announce your tax fruad

  20. I’d love to see him in Cork if I’m looking for a taxi, free trip every time.

  21. Maybe you can tell revenue you can pay in hopes and dreams.

  22. Does he also have a big sign that says “lots of cash on board, please come rob me?”

  23. I saw this taxi driver at Cork Kent a few weeks back, he missed out on 3 or 4 fares, myself included. He would easily make up on the money lost to the card machine company on the fares he is missing out on and of course by not having to pay a fine. But I guess can’t make up for the taxes he is dodging.

  24. So if we take this lads comments on the level, that he’d be losing 5-10k a year to fees, and that’s at 5%, is he advertising to the whole country that he’s keeping 50k+ at home in cash or worse, in his car, while he’s out driving?

I don’t think there’s any way he’s not an eejit.

  25. Taxi drivers are a shower of money grabbing arseholes who think the ridiculous amount of money they charge for basic fares is more than justified. 5 minutes of their time can often cost 20 euro in a city.
