  2. That’s completely messed up. Not to mention the fact that investing in Romania and Bulgaria is really important to Europe’s security nowadays and entire Eastern flank of both EU and NATO, but hey I haven’t really heard Austria caring about that too much either…

    One Austrian newspaper just wrote a critical article about how the government’s stance on Schengen puts EU pressure on Austria and asked the minister for a statement at general, ordinary press meeting, he didn’t „announce“ anything.

    And Karner basically replied that they just got the Air-Schengen deal done, and there‘s no point in already talking about the next step if the current deal isn‘t even implemented fully.

    There‘s nothing new or breaking about this.

  9. The sad thing is that I can’t even fully blame Austria for this shit.

    The major problem in all of this is caused by our corrupt government that accept Romania to be treated like shit since they have more things to gain from not fighting Austria back over “trivial” things like this one. Also, they have more important things to discuss now, like how they can bring Romania back to be an one-party state, so that they continue stealing public money without being bothered by anyone.

  17. Austria is more eastern Europe aligned than Bulgaria and Romania. Both these nations have supported EU/Nato and Ukraine very well in recent times. What has Austria done besides helping Russia?

    Like 99% of Migrants have to pass from Turkey to Bulgaria to get to Europe. Obviously that route is very badly protected. When Bulgaria and Romania step it up then we can let them in. Currently it really makes no sense.

  20. As an Austrian, I am sad to say I am not surprised and expect it to get worse once our Putin loving, totally not NAZI FPÖ stands to win the next election.

    This country is a joke and at this point all I hope for a way out to the more liberal parts of the EU.

  27. On what grounds? EU is governed by treaties and rule of law. When a member has fulfilled all the requirements they have every right to open borders same as any other member.
